About This File
Bookworms rejoice! Are you tired of spending your evenings at home watching movies when a book would be so much better? Well, do not fret for now you can finally purchase written works printed on actual paper to read in the comfort of your home!
What does this mod do?
For players:
- adds a 'Read a book' activity to all three timeslots
- adds a second-hand book section to Serendipity Comics including no fewer than four (five with the add-on!) used books for sale
- changes the pregnancy books at Bonwit Teller into an actual book you have to read to gain benefits from
- adds an option to view your bookshelf from your inventory at home
-
NEW for users of The Wharf and Library Card:
- allows library books to be checked out and read at home for additional effects
- adds a total of 37(!) books to the framework including a few additions to Serendipity Comics
-
this feature requires the following mods to be installed:
- The Wharf by Dragon42/Shadowspawn
- Library Card (version 1.20.8+) by Dragon42/Shadowspawn
- Reading is an intellectual affair and smart characters tend to read longer and faster and will usually have an easier time becoming absorbed in a book.
-
Reading a book can have a variety of effects including, but not limited to:
- increasing skills
- increasing masculinity/femininity
- restoring identity
- triggering moods
- reducing or increasing boredom
- taking up time
For modders:
- You can add your own books to the database and/or the comic store.
- Books can be as simple or intricate as you want. I tried to make the process as easy and flexible as possible. See my annotated template for details.
- If you have any questions, don't hesitate to hit me up on discord.
What are all those files?
- KTX Read a Book 0.1.3.xcl - This is the main file containing all the code and media for the framework (REQUIRED).
- KTX Book Strategy Guide.xcl - An add-on containing a single book which is not entirely serious and a little fourth-wall-breaking (OPTIONAL).
- Resources for MOD CREATORS.zip - An archive for modders containing a template, documentation and a book stat calculator (FOR MODDERS).
Would you like feedback?
Yes, absolutely! Please let me know about your reading experience! Did you find any bugs? Do the results make sense to you? Are the numbers reasonable in your opinion? If you have anything to report, the best way to get in contact is via the game's discord.
What's up next?
Plans for version 0.2+:
-
more
bugsbooks (duh!) - a dedicated bookstore at the mall
- filters for browsing
- built-in support for books with fully written stories similar to the library books
- lots more...
Thanks!
A big thank you to everyone in the community for feedback, inspiration and support! Special thanks to Dragon42/Shadowspawn for making the library crossover possible! ❤️

Released
I am very excited to bring you a small but significant update to the main file in collaboration with Dragon42/Shadowspawn (❤️):
-
Added support for library books!
- requires Library Card (soon-to-be-released version 1.20.8) and The Wharf
- books can be borrowed from the library to be read at home; just beware of late fees 😉
- adds 36(!) books with actual stories that will be unlocked during reading sessions
- Replaced background image for evening reading sessions with a prettier one
- Fixed a bug introduced in version 0.1 that prevented author names from being displayed when viewing a book from the bookshelf (oops!)
- Fixed a bug where canceling out of a daytime reading session also canceled any plans for evening activities (mega-oops!)
Since this crossover relies on both mods to function properly our testing opportunities were somewhat limited, so there may be some teething troubles still. In case you come across any issues just let either of us know and we'll get it sorted out as soon as possible.
