Xenoblade Chronicles 3

Yep been playing that, would have had a first (or halfway through) impressions but I got engrossed in it and I have no completed the game so this will be my full "review" of it. And since I dislike doing these without some sort of image to accompany them I have again put a selection of my FFXIV screenshots (both SFW and NSFW ones) in the spoiler at the bottom (including the sort of shot I never took with any of the bethesda games) but anyway that comes lately onto the review.

Review in the spoiler below, there will also be some spoilers for the game so read at your own risk.

So first thing's first the story, it's actually fairly complex underneath it all, having many twists and turns as well as dealing with love and loss and whether or not it's better to preserve the "now" or let the future occur. But for the most part it follows Noah and his group as they get to grips with the fact that the war between Agnus and Keves (the two nations that make up the world) has been entirely manufactured in order to keep a status quo going, the soldiers in this war are all effectively child soldiers being "born" at the age of ten and dying at the age of twenty and basically doing nothing but fight in the interim (this is probably simplified as some of the Kevesi and Agnian commanders look older than twenty) trying to kill as many of the enemy as possible in order to harvest life and fill up a flame clock in order to power themselves up as well as to build accomplishments in order to rank their colony up to gain more luxuries and benefits with gold rank being the top of the top and dirt rank being the very bottom (which actually adds a bit of nice world building as the main characters use the term "mudder" as an insult, which in a world where Dirt is the lowest of the low makes sense as something to call someone when you're insulting them.) So Noah and his merry band start out as enemies, fight each other for a bit until a third party sees this and decides to put a stop to this granting them a power called Ouroborous (I have 100% spelled that wrong) which allows them to merge together into a big beastie looking thing with great power however this sets them against the entire world (or so it seems) as the world is ruled by a power called Moebius (another cool piece of writing as both Moebius and Ouroborous are symbols of infinity) and do not want it to change from its present state.

As for the characters, it took 40 hours until I encountered a plot relevant character (that wasn't a villain) that I hated and thankfully she wasn't part of the main group and I could choose not to interact with her too much (she basically shows up towards the end of the story but is thankfully kept quiet) in fact the core group (Noah, Mio, Eunie, Taion, Lanz, Sena, Riku and Manana) are all incredibly likeable characters as are the majority of the heroes (I really like Ashera, she's a blood thirsty battle maniac and I love it) whilst the antagonists are sufficiently hateable. Also in comparison to Shulk and Rex I find Noah much better, both Rex and Shulk are fairly young (or at least fairly young looking) and it feels hard to like them (so to speak) whereas Noah is much older and more world weary lets say. You also find out a lot more about the core characters and heroes (and even some villains) during each characters' personal quest (side stories for the core group, hero quests for the heroes) and while I did not manage to complete all of them (I was missing 7 out of 17 heroes personal quests) I still feel that they did a good job of fleshing out the characters and the world.

Now the actual gameplay, it's similar to Chronicles 2 in its execution albeit with blade combos being replaced by chain attacks, there's not too much to complain about the core gameplay loop but I will say this; this game's difficulty levels are not balanced around a party of 7, I had to actually drop the difficulty down from normal to easy because one encounter was absolutely fucking me, it feels like they overcompensated for the extra 4 fighters and made everything harder but it also feels like easy mode is just too easy. Additionally with some of the classes it feels like it's just a bit too fiddly to cancel auto-attacks into arts or arts into other arts especially when the fight is getting just a bit chaotic. Other than that there's not too much done wrong.

Finally the voice acting and music. The voice acting in this game is far superior to 2's (which isn't all that hard actually) with each character actually sounding like they have some direction and thus sounding human. As for the music, it's pretty good but there's nothing really memorable except for the menu music which I hear a lot as I pause the game to do something else. All in all the voice acting and music is fine nothing offensively bad but nothing that stands out either.

Also I had some theories on this game and I'm happy to say that most of them I was correct about. First theory was that the world of Aionios is merged world between the worlds of 1 and 2 and late into the game this is confirmed, the big giveaway was the Urayan mountains which look like a titan from 2 as well as the great sword which is the Mekonis sword from 1. Additionally Eunie is one of the winged people (whose race name I've forgotten) from 1 whilst Mio is Gormotti and Sena is a Blade from 2. Next one was that the Queens are Melia and Nia, again I was correct on this and it gets confirmed late in the game (by the way adult Melia is hot.) However I was wrong about Nintendo trying to turn this in their own version of the Final Fantasy series purely because there are a trio of characters that share names with characters from 2, I was wrong about this as this game is a direct sequel to both 1 and 2.

Overall I really enjoyed the game and while I didn't have as much trouble putting it down as I did with Legends Arceus but it's a solid recommend if you enjoyed 1 and 2. Now we just need to wait for Shulk, Elma and Pneuma to get added as DLC characters, as well as the inevitable swimsuit DLC.
