Golden Sun
Image of Mist in the first spoiler and my FFXIV in the second. Pretty much just posting this entry to wax lyrical about Golden Sun and moan about Breath of the Wild.
So golden Sun, I've been replaying it lately and it's probably fair to say that it's probably one of my favourite RPGs of all time, probably second only to Final Fantasy IX. And honestly that game is just such a well crafted experience, the combat is engaging (yes even for turn based combat,) the puzzles are challenging but aren't bullshit, the exploration is rewarding and encourages back tracking and returning to early game areas and the music is amazing. The only downside the game has is its graphics being made for the Gameboy Advance and they might be looking worse to me because I'm playing on an emulator in fullscreen mode.
The story is your usual JRPG fare, your main character is a young man with incredibly spiky hair living a quiet life in a secluded village before he gets caught up in the plot and has to go get his kidnapped friend back while saving the world, he's joined in this with his buffoonish best friend and along the way meets the last two members of his party. I'm being intentionally vague on this because you should just go play the fucking game it's that good. It also manages to do something that no one else has managed to do in media: it makes earth magic actually interesting, not even Avatar: The Last Airbender managed this and they made it a martial art, which is important since the main character uses earth powers, there's also we creatures called Djinn that you collect it's not quite pokemon, there's only 24 split into 4 groups of 6 each corresponding to one of the 4 elements (earth, fire, wind and water) and their use actually adds a level of tactics to the game as they need to be set (they have three states: standby, set and resting) in order to use any of the game's summons which can be done in battle by calling them out or in the menu before any fighting even occurs, additionally the djinn can be swapped amongst the 4 members of your party to give each person a different set of skills for use in battle and outside of it which also affects each individuals class.
Also the summons, they're mostly meh except for the most powerful earth summon, seriously just look at this:
But yeah, I'd definitely recommend playing Golden Sun and since Nintendo renewed the IP I'm hopeful for a new game on the switch, maybe a full 3D open world remake of the original.
As for BoTW, I still hate it. My mate has been urging me to replay it and since nothing else has really been holding my attention I thought I'd go back to it and yeah I still hate it (which makes me the minority) mostly because I feel the combat isn't as good as the combat in previous 3D LoZ games, it's too damn quiet and the fucking durability is absolute bullshit.
