3DS Max Export multiplying verts

I've been using 3DS Max for a few months now and only recently have I begun to notice that after exporting from 3DS Max, the vert count on my meshes seems to multiply. For example, a mesh might go in with 5325 verts and come out with 28212 (5.29x the original) even if I've done nothing to it. I've tried messing around with import/export settings a few times but I can't seem to get anything to work. Welding is useless as well since it happens in export. I've searched around online a few times and the only thread I found said to always apply a smooth modifier but that doesn't seem to work either. All this aside, I've noticed no problems weighting these meshes or performance impact in-game. So I guess the question is how do I stop this from happening and does it really matter?

 

3DS Max 2016, and my export settings if it helps.
