Kashiwaba Tomoe Posted August 18, 2012 Posted August 18, 2012 Anyone know any mods that make skyrim run better on lower spec machines ? While my box will, barley, run skyrim, it's not exactly worth playing in it's current form.
Ark of Truth Posted August 18, 2012 Posted August 18, 2012 Not that I know off. Skyrim isn't really a low spec PC game.
Kashiwaba Tomoe Posted August 18, 2012 Author Posted August 18, 2012 It's oblivion with dual weilding in my opinion. But then Bethesda doesn't innovate that well.
Ark of Truth Posted August 18, 2012 Posted August 18, 2012 It uses a completely different graphics engine. IMO this is their best game to date. If you post your RAM, GPU, OS and CPU I can check to see there is some fixes.
greenquesadilla Posted August 18, 2012 Posted August 18, 2012 http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/19632 http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/7041 http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/6387 these helped my performance greatly. i run on a GeForce 9300m GS 512MB with a dual core CPU at 2.00 Ghz with 4gb RAM and i can run it at 800x600 w/ only FXAA and high vanilla textures and rarely crash. i get around 20-30 fps most of the time, unless there are a lot of npcs/magic on the screen. then sometimes it dips into the mid-low 10s, but i can manage. the only thing i would avoid is using mods that are too script-heavy, otherwise the game will be extremely laggy. though, i recommend just buying an xbox or ps3 and getting skyrim if money is an issue, unless you really want to have mods. a pc that can run skyrim with good graphics will cost you at least $700, while a console will only cost $300-400.
The DarkSlayer Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 I recommend this one http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/16464
Kashiwaba Tomoe Posted August 19, 2012 Author Posted August 19, 2012 greencasidilla my box is equal or better it seems, execpt it's an older single core AMD chip. Also, checking out those mods, all seem worthwhile, the game runs just really slow, and an extra 20-30 FPS would move it from barley runs to decently playable.
Guest Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 If you know you're way around the ini files you can make your own edits/tweaks. You could also look online for tutorials and such.
Kashiwaba Tomoe Posted August 19, 2012 Author Posted August 19, 2012 Yeah, I know, I'd allready disabled a lot of it via the .ini But texture replacers help a LOT too. Anyway playtest tiem.
greenquesadilla Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 oh, i forgot these http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/736 http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/9571 http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/9930 fog really hurt my fps. removing it gave me around 5 fps in some places. i also recommend spending most of your wandering time in the whiterun plains, blackreach, or in soul cairn (if you have dawnguard) if you don't tolerate below average frame rates. i maintain 30-60 fps in those places.
Kashiwaba Tomoe Posted August 19, 2012 Author Posted August 19, 2012 Keep 'em coming (prehaps we should sticky this for other low end users ?) it's approaching playable now (fog should help a lot I bet) due to lower CPU load. Main problem left other than lower FPS is that controls seem to lag at times, keystrokes don't seem to do anything at times, or last too long, but those were also issues with FO3 and oblivion (which my PCs specs are more than good enough for, hinting at poor coding on bethesdas part )
greenquesadilla Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 i would suggest using an xbox controller. i find playing with a controller a lot easier than playing with a mouse/keyboard, especially when there is lag/stuttering. however, it may be because i have played games with the xbox controller since the original xbox came out in 2002 (or around that time) and could be totally unrelated, but it is worth a try if the mouse/keyboard controls don't work as intended. skyrim was built for consoles, anyway.
Kashiwaba Tomoe Posted August 19, 2012 Author Posted August 19, 2012 Fuck buying a console controller to buy a PC, I'd just buy a console if I wanted to use the controller. Besides on a game that was made properly (not skyrim) keyboard+mouse will always be far superior. But yeah I know it was built for console, bethsoft doesn't make PC games, they just port it (poorly) and rely on modders to turn their shitty UI into something usable. Used all the suggestions thus far, running a lot better, probally going to come down to me tweaking the .ini further at this point, unless there's a mod that takes more of the games textures and lowers the resolution (that or a fan patch that optimizes processor usage.
greenquesadilla Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 i also forgot to mention this mod http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/18593 and then tweak it with the guide from the link i posted earlier http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/19632 doing this also helped me a lot. for textures, there is this http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/12801 but i have never used it. i have heard good things from people who use it, though.
Kashiwaba Tomoe Posted August 19, 2012 Author Posted August 19, 2012 Cool, gona give those a whirl, last one especially looks useful.
Mana Yakushima Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 Has this been posted? http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/14504/ I've got a decent card so I can't vouch for it's usefulness
greenquesadilla Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 i don't know if you are still paying attention to this thread, but there is the D3D9.dll generator from new vegas that works with skyrim (or any bethesda game for that matter, i think). simply, extract the .rar to another folder and follow the readme. if your card isn't listed in the drop menu, select the other option to type in your card's name. when the D3D9.dll has been generated in the folder you extracted the .rar into, put the file in your skyrim directory and you'll notice a significant increase in performance. i just used it and now i'm getting an additional 10-15fps in most places where i was getting slideshows before. http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/mods/34970
