Player Exclusive Armor Path?

I recently got back into Skyrim and am starting fresh. Was hoping to be doing a lot of body modding and checked out the mod PC Exclusive Armor Path but seems a lot of people in the comments have trouble and bugs with it mainly because it was last updated June 2013. Was wondering if there was an alternative to this mod around anywhere or how hard it is to do it yourself?

There's at least a few standalone vanilla armor mods on the nexus like these:

Their mesh directories should be very similar to vanilla so mixing and matching isn't terribly difficult, and IIRC UNP Spice Gear lets you convert vanilla to spice at a tanning rack.
