maximum drive and killing moon bug

on my existing character, if use maximum drive or the killing moon, my pc instantly dies at the end of the effect. if i start a new game, then the spell works, however, if I then play that game for awhile, it will eventually start auto-killing me again. has anyone else encountered this bug/know how to fix it? thanks.
