Making the mark

There are a few mods that have dialogue where a slave will say things like "make the mark, master" and such like. 

 

Does anyone know where this trope comes from?

 

Are there any mods where male npcs might say, "I'm making the mark. You're a slave now." or something like that? Particularly something that changes your reputation in the eyes of others.
