They just want to legally murder people because of an out dated notion of an eye for an eye, thinking it'll send a message (which it doesn't) or dehumanizing the criminal and writing them off completely, assuming they can never be rehabilitated and made a member of society again. [/quote'] To quote Johnny Rico when an MI deserter was hanged for killing a little girl (the one from the book, not the cardboard cutout from the movie): "I don't know how to stop things like this from happening in the first place, but I know how to stop them from happening again." Most violent offenders cannot be rehabilitated and are violent offenders because there is something wrong with them on a mechanical level. As for this particular case, though, I don't think first degree murder is going to stick - first degree murder is when you go out with the purpose of killing someone and have a plan to do so. I doubt they get death, but they're going away for a long time. The only real problem with the death penalty, in my mind, is innocent people have been killed by it before and will be killed by it again due to a convict-at-all-costs mentality in the United States. The death penalty should be reserved for the most egregious and obvious of cases.
