Can equip items hotkeyed, but can't unequip?

I'm playing on the PC using a controller( blasphemy I know ) and I'm using the WestTek optics mod( nightvision ) and I can hotkey the goggles and equpi them through the hotkey but in order to unequip them I have to go into apparel and manually unequip them. Is this normal for items beyond weapons that are hotkeyed?

That's normal for anything hotkeyed for equip. There's no built in function for hotkeys to toggle equip which is what it sounds like you want.

 

You would need to equip something else that uses the same slot or use a mod with a script to unequip. Though the mod script gets a bit clunky.

Try having two of the items when you set it on the hotkey, seems to work for one of my eyewear mods
