When topics get lots comments it gets lots of pages.

The topics right now will be seen as

"What mod is this ?" (Pages: 1 2 3 4 ... 1031 )

I would like to suggest to change this to

"What mod is this ?" (Pages: 1 ... 1028 1029 1030 1031 )

Because there is a bigger chance that people are following a topic and just need to view the last added pages than that someone started to read a topic, stopped on the third page and want's to continue there next time when the topic has way more pages.

Or you can subscribe to the topic and then your email notice will take you right to the first post that you haven't read on page '673'.

I see what you mean for those very long threads, but the way it is now people are encouraged to read the shorter threads before jumping in and posting. So it depends. Plus, it's so easy to jump to the end just by clicking on the last post shown in the lists of threads pages. But, yeah, your way would be just as good, too. Still, I like how the current way tries to practice good forum habits of reading a thread before posting into it, tho, again, the really longs ones of certain types are exceptions where we're not expected to read the whole thread. Anyway, I always learn something when someone asks a question like this. I think Ark of Truth has told us that one before which was when I learned it! And Tom's info was just now new to me!

I don't think there is much profit in the current system.

For short threads up to 5 pages there would be no change.

For threads longer than 5 pages

And the 'we take the first four pages' does not in any way increase the number of people who would read the whole topic.

Because there are several categories of people.

1 Those who didn't read the topic before, should start reading at the first page anyway.

2 Those who started reading but stopped on page 2,3 or 4.

3 Those who started reading but stopped in the middle (of a large topic) therefore neither the old method or the suggested method would help them.

4 Those who follow a topic and have read to all posts last time they checked, this would probably mean that these people would want to start somewhere in the last four pages.

And I think the 4th category is (way) bigger then the second category. Especially if there is paid attention to the fact that the 2nd and 4th category would overlap for smaller topics, topics of only 5 pages would completely overlap while a topic of 7 pages would overlap on the fourth page.

Or you can jump pages using the address bar by changing the number in red.

Note this won't work if you have the OP page open.

This is not what I meant, as this would only make it easier to go to pages in the middle of a topic, if you do remember the page you want to be on BTW.

I just hate it when I follow a long topic that has had a few new posts where some are on page 231 and some are on 232 that I need to go to 232 and then back to 231. I think there is more chance these posts are overlooked than that people would stop reading from the beginning.

But really, even something like this would make it less annoying

"What mod is this ?" (Pages: 1 2 3 4 ... 1030 1031 )
