drakeinese Posted January 1, 2017 Posted January 1, 2017 Alright so I am new to this mods thing I have downloaded all the prerequisites and have them running however the download is not working every time I attempt to download it states "The Specified path, file name or both are too long." and so on I shortened the name it still is not working any ideas?
ButchDiavolo Posted January 1, 2017 Posted January 1, 2017 It could be that you have run into Windows maximum of 256 characters for file paths/names. When modding, it is surprisingly easy to hit that wall. If a filename/ path is too long it will not work or install. So check if the filenames are indeed going over that limit. If you are going over this limit, then you will have to move/ reinstall Steam, Skyrim and ModOrganizer to a directory closer to the root of your harddrive. For example: mine is installed at D:\Steam. And I use ModOrganizer, which is installed at D:\MO. If you need to move everything, do a Google search on the subject to find out how best to handle it. If you only just started your modlist, it might even be quicker to just delete Steam, Skyrim and ModOrganizer completely and start over, making sure to install everything as close to the root directory (C:, D: or whichever) as possible. If you want to completely reinstall everything, don't forget to delete the files in the C:\Users\[your computername]\AppData\Local- and C:\Users\[your computername]\Documents\My Games directories! And NEVER install Steam in a program files or program files (x86) folder!
drakeinese Posted January 1, 2017 Author Posted January 1, 2017 So Installing steam in program files would be the problem? if none of the above is an issue?
ButchDiavolo Posted January 1, 2017 Posted January 1, 2017 No, that would not cause the message you got. Installing Steam in program files can, and usually will, give problems with permissions for writing to/ starting from folders. If you are not running into the filename limit, then unfortunately I have no idea why you got that message, sorry
