How do I port models to Fallout ?

Hi everyone,
I always see lots of modders uploading some amazing shots of their characters whose outfits or accessories ( or even the characters themselves ) have been ported from some other games ( or maybe they've been re-created completely by the modder , I can't tell ) .
I wanted to ask if anyone could give me any hints about where to start from in order to achieve similar results, I think all of us do have that particular character or armor piece we got attached to and would like to see in game.
Could any of you be kind enough to give me some tips ?

  • You need like 3d editing tool ( 3dsmax/ blender ), proper scripts for improting the Fallout/Oblivion/Skyrim meshes ( aka .nif )
  • you need to know the file format from the game you are ripping from,  and its plugins/script tools
  • nifskope latest version to edit meshes after exporting from 3dtool
  • photoshop/gimp + plugins to open .dds to convert specific textures or retexture

I recommend Caliente's outfitstudio2, it makes porting stuff from other Bethesda games very easy, just start by porting easy stuff from Skyrim > Fallout4. The skeleton pose armature is very similar to the Skyrim's. Oblivion for example uses T-pose, where Skyrim is using "relaxed T-pose". So if you wan't to properly convert stuff you will need to learn how to handle with the bones by moving/rescaling to fit the Fallout4 bodymesh

There is quite a lot to talk about it, there is a old Nightasy tutorial about porting stuff from poser > Skyrim. You might wanna check it out first.

Ty very much, thought 3dsmax or maya were something necessary and I do already use them for 3d rendering so I'm used to importing textures and mesh via scripts .

I was unsure about what to do after importing them but I'm now going to check that tutorial and see what I can do...and maybe I'll try using outfitstudio2 as well to simplify the whole process.
