Realistic NPC Reactions

I have done a lot of searching, but so far I haven't found a mod that takes care of this.

Something that has always bothered me is how NPCs react to my character. On the one hand, if I do something illegal they're all over me, even if I didn't do it in front of them. Apparently word travels at the speed of light in Skyrim. Conversely, even if I'm wearing my Dark Brotherhood leather armor and face-concealing hood, I can walk through town and no one cares. I'd love a mod that corrects this and makes NPCs, especially guards, react more realistically. If I run through the town naked, I want people to gasp and shout. If I'm wearing my DB armor, I want people to react with fear and distrust. If I kill someone and slip outside without being seen, I want to get away with it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can slip away if you are sneaking

And I do, except the next time I see a guard, he says "Didn't I see you coming out of so-and-so's house?" And what about the other stuff? A more realistic reaction to intimidating armor, or NPCs that have stronger reactions to me breaking into their houses when I'm caught? Just asking me if I'm lost in a stern voice isn't very realistic.

If we are trying to do that, we need new voice acting and a new AI package, somewhat hard to do but not impossible.

I agree with you on the subject about the DB armor. I hate it when I wear a masked DB hood but people still recognize me; what's the mask for then?

Maybe a mod could be implemented, making it so that wearing the DB armor gives a set bonus that changes A.I. behavior towards the player.

NPC will no longer interact with the player, similar to if the player has a high stage of vampirism.

Bounties for crime will no longer be incurred, similar to being a werewolf.

However, guards will no longer present a yield option if you commit a crime, they will simply continue attacking.

Also, certain NPC might also attack you on sight if wearing DB armor, such as the penitus oculatus.

Since most of those features already exist in vanilla Skyrim, I think making a mod that does that is quite possible. It wouldn't require new voice acting I don't think.

I'd be happy if the guards just stopped being rude and obnoxious:

- "Go fiddling with any locks around here, we're going to have a real problem."

- "I find your hand in my pocket, I'm cutting it off."

- etc.

after being named Thane of their damned city.

(All those 40 septim bounties for punching them bloody add up after a while...)

Creamline, I really like your ideas, they would make the game much more immersive. I know there's a modder working on an aging/scaring mod that looks really sweet, and he said NPCs will comment on your face if you get too many scars, so that implies altering AI behavior to accommodate for changes in a PCs physical appearance is possible. How hard it is, however, remains to be seen.

Oaklore, I totally agree. I can understand them mentioning rumors about me, but there shouldn't be any way they'd know that I'm a thief just by looking at me, especially not in towns I've never been to before.

The immediate problem I see is where to draw the line. For instance, let's say you commit a crime wearing your DB armor and a guard spots you. You run away but don't incur a bounty because they don't know who you are. But then if you do this enough, you'll become known as the bandit in the DB armor. So what if you change armor? Does that mean your bounties disappear?

I really need to learn how to mod...

Edit: You know what would be really cool? Is if people mistook you for someone from a particular town if you wear armor or clothes from there, like if you wear the Hammerfell clothes, people assume you're from Hammerfell. If you wear Stormcloak armor, people assume you're with the Stormcloaks. And so on. It would make things a bit more complicated to code, but infinitely more interesting in the long run.

Well, I just recently wear thief's clothes and the guard said he recognizes my clothes and such.

I think the idea is there, but it is such a weak implementation.

I already ask couple modders to implement kill count by vampires so the NPC will react to it. They said they will look into it, but nothing so far...

I think, even if you keep committing crimes wearing the DB armor set, no one should be able to recognize you and you incur no bounty. This is because the the DB is an organization that everyone knows. People will just blame the crimes on the DB.

To compensate, maybe a random scenario similar to what happens when you steal from someone could be added. Hired thugs would attack you randomly, and they could be carrying a note that said something along these lines:

" I know the true identty of the DB murderer that struck at town X. Dispose of him. Bla bla bla. Sender"

I remember someone did a mod to disguise yourself. Like wearing a full set of Stormcloak gear will make people think you're with them. You'll get attacked by Imperials' Soldiers. So that might get developed even deeper.

It'd be even better if the NPCs in the town acknowledge your status, not skill status, but Quest acquired status. I'm Thane of Whiterun and children would still treat me like some noname. Especially the Jarl's children. "Another wanderer, way to lick my father's boots. Good job.", "A new servant? Remember that I like my meat rare.". Do these ring any bells? And WE, Dragonborns saved their land from dragons. Uneducated children! Bethesda literately made me download the Killable Children Mod.

The first thing I did when I got that mod was sneak into their rooms at night while they were sleeping and...*ahem*, well, you get the idea.

Anyway, it sounds like AI tweaks like these are completely doable. I'm still learning the first basic steps of modding, so I don't know what it would entail. Getting them to react a certain way due to status, armor/clothing, or general appearance would be great, though it would have to be balanced so as not to conflict. Like if you're known for being the Thane but also covered in scars and with a bounty on your head. How would people react to you then? Would they feel betrayed by their Thane? "How could you abuse your position like this?" could be something an NPC says.

Oh! And another idea would be a town crier. Like as you complete certain questlines, there's a man in every town and city that shouts out the news. "Hear ye, hear ye! Dark Brotherhood assassinates the Emperor! People of Solitude said to be crying in the street!" Or something. It's a thought.

like the fact i walk around wearing my nightinggale armor and hood and im the leader of the thieves guild. yet i see thief npc's getting ganged on in riften as a random encounted and noone notices me. or says anything to me about what im wearing.

except that elf in solitude about my wardrobe if im going to the blue palace. or if you walk around nude you get. someone should have put some clothes on this morning. and the half ass expressions from them. its like eveyone in skyrim is a damn vulcan. what oh my he's dead what could have happend followed by fresh fish for sale. i see it and im like really just ok my he is dead and then move on like its an everyday thing no big send for the corpse cart bring out ya dead the ai needs a full over haul oh and the 1.6 patch broke my game it hard crashes nad freezes my pc i have to do a hard reset to fix it so those considering it might want to wait

This sounds pretty easy, just need replacing of the fuz files. These could be custom npcs, but you can just change the voice files for the naked, tresspass reactions in the misc tab in people's dialogue(quests that are not apparent on your quest list).

You could change from, "Aren't you ashamed, put some clothes on." To "Dear lord, you need to find some clothes to put on that bare body!", "(S)He) is Naked!"

And for tresspassing, I think you can set that package to immediately attack you, but maybe people back in the days were dumber and more naive. But eventually, they say "Last Warning, get out of here." But yea "Get out of my house" would be better than, you're not suppose to be here, the genetic robotic response. LMAO

Another annoying part of this mechanism is when you enter a store just before it's closing hours, initiate a conversation with one of the clerks, begin moving through dialogue options, then their closing hour hits and the other person in the shop begins to freak out yelling at you that you're not supposed to be in there. Then, immediately after you finish the conversation with the one you're talking to and close the dialogue window, suddenly THEY freak out as well and a minute later you're surrounded by city guards that have stormed through the door.

I mean seriously, it's not like you picked a lock to get in there or woke them up out of bed by rifling through their closet or pyjama pockets while they slept. You merely engaged in conversation which lasted beyond their closing hours. This "Trespasser! Call the city guard! Bounty! Bounty!" trigger should only happen if your presence in the building occurs (or remains undetected until) after their door has locked for the evening.
