Creation Kit Crashing On Windows 8 or 10

I saw several archived threads pertaining to an issue I recently started having with the creation kit, after upgrading to a new windows 10 PC, the creation kit began crashing very very frequently, I would like to share my solution for any others that may have been having this issue.

Because the creation kit is a steam launched program, you can not simply right click it go into properties and run the compatibility wizard, but you can use go into properties when it is loaded on the task manager, go to the compatibility tab and click the "run compatibility wizard" or something similar button and then say yes to running the recommended settings, I had zero problems with it crashing after that, just the typical minute or two of nonresponsiveness when loading new files, it will pass, just leave it in the foreground, don't click anything and wait a bit.

I recently upgraded to Win10Pro and somewhere therein lies my problem!

I have been using Merge Mods through Mod Organizer (successfully for MONTHS under Win7Pro... and, when the Merged Mod gives me a result that the NavMeshes conflicted and need to be rebuilt, I open the Merged Mod in TES5Edit, expand the Modname, delete the NavMeshes and Exit TES5Edit.  I then open Creation Kit through Mod Organizer, double-click on all ESM Masters for the Merged Mod, set the Merged Mod as the active file, then finish loading it, and then save it right back out.  This regenerates all of the NavMeshes.  NO PROBLEM in Win7Pro!!!)

BUT, now in Win10Pro, I cannot load any files into Creation Kit in order to generate NavMeshes. I load Creation Kit.  (one error near the end, ignore it, no problem, CK finishes loading).   I select the ESM Masters for the Merged Mod, and set the Merged Mod as the "Active" file,   Creation Kit then loads Skyrim.esm.  THEN, no matter WHICH ONE the second .ESM file is, CK gets exactly 70% through, has two errors.  The first one is:

First Error:

Asset
File ...\TES Shared\misc\BGSLocalizedString.cpp

P.S.  My Machine:

             Win10Pro 64-bit

             Intel i5-6600 CPU @ 3.3GHz (4CPUs)

             16GB Ram

             nVidia GeForce GTX 1070

             16GB Ram

             2560x1440 (320bit) (59Hzz)

Line 2871
LOCALICATION: Error opening or resizing strings file.

I select <Ignore>

The second Error is:

MASTERFILE: LOCALIZATION: Zero entries or empty block size read from strings file STRINGS/Dawnguard_ENGLISH STRINGS. Stings will be missing.

"Yes to all" will disable all Warnings for this context.

So, I select <Yes to all>

And CK simply stops working, Micro$oft alleges it's trying to find a solution (uh, huh, $URE it i$), and then CK closes.

It's always those two errors, it's always exactly 70% through the second .ESM file that's loading into CK, and CK ALWAYS stops working.

So far, I have tried:

1.  Running CK as administrator.

2.  Running CK Compatibility and applying changes.

3.  Setting ALL Skyrim Files to NOT be "Read Only"

4.  Setting ALL skyrim Files to be ALL permissions (including Edit) for ALL people on this PC, regardless whether Admins or Users.

5.  Changing bAllowMultipleMasterLoads=    from "0" to "1", under <General>

6.  Changing bEnableAudio=    from "1" to "0" under <Audio>

7.  Changing bForce1XShaders=    from "0" to "1" under <Display>

8.  Copying dxgi.dll, d3dx11_42.dll and d3dx11_43.dll from C:\Windows\System32 to ...\Skyrim\ (Root Directory, NOT the \Skyrim\Data directory!)

ALL of these changes have been mentioned as being successful for at least one user as reported in every forum that I've seen so far.  MOST of these changes have been successful for Some to Many Users!  These are ALL of the alleged "fixes" that I have found in two days'-worth of googling this problem.  Absolutely NONE of them work for me.

Does ANYONE have ANY other suggestions, short of bagging Win10Pro (and thus DirectX12) and heading back to Win7Pro for the duration of my gaming life?  ANYONE???

Thanks!  Allen

On Windows 10 (upgraded Pro version coming from Win7 Ultimate x64) my CK loads fine too, but I can't even open kyrim.esm It shows one errorafter another, ignoring them all and then trying to do anything else leads to either: "CK isn't working anymore - close / blah" or to it simply not responding anymor and having to be killed via taskmanager.

I haven't found a way to change that, too. I simply can't use CK on WIn10, while everything is perfectly fine on my 2nd Windows 7 installation, and both Skyrim folders are exactly the same.

It doesn't even change anything to change compatibility modes. Everything is fine unless Skyrim.esm is loaded. Trying to load another esp doesn'T help either. It seems that nothing does.

And here lie the small first world problems of Windows 10... I feel for everyone panicking and finally submitting to the last minute upgrade, because: hey it's for free. Not everything you get for free will change the world for the better. ;) Anyway, I gave up on running CK on Windows 10 and rather use it on Win7. :)

Yah, I no longer have a Win7Pro gaming machine, but I may just convert one of 'em back JUST so I can use CK in the damn thing.  TES5Edit, Merge Mod, LOOT, Wrye Bash, FNIS, all work just fine in Win10Pro.  it's only CK that doesn't do squat.  CRAP!!

The strangest part of it is: The Oblivion Construction Set works just fine. I tried to test it, just to see if it is a general problem with loading esms/esps. Even if I load everything that I have (and for Oblivion it is much more than for Skyrim) everything loads fine, I can change stuff, save it and reload it again, while CK wouldn't even want to load anything.

And there's no obvious reason why it acts like that either.

Seems we all have to hope for Skyrims Special Edition in October and see if they improved compatibility with Win10. :(

Perhaps we should take this discussion off LoversLab?  If so, my e-mail is abagnew42@comcast.nte.  And I do need help.  What I finally decided to do was create a Dual-Boot machine with Win7Pro and Win10Pro.  i figured that, once I booted up in Win7Pro, I could just access CK where it had been installed under Win10Pro, and it would execute.  I HAVE done that before with no problem, like when I slammed a Win7Pro refresh on a previous installation to clear caches, fix the Config.sys stuff and gunk.  BUT, no go.  I installed Win7Pro on its own partitioned drive (H:) with Win10Pro on (C:).  Skyrim and all of its associated files (MO, CK, TES5Edit, Loot, etc.) are all on their own drive (D:).  I also installed Steam on H: but now I can't find any way for the Win7Pro Steam to *SEE* the Steam installed on D:.  So, I would love it if someone could advise me whether you can use Win7Pro on a Dual-Boot machine to access Win10Pro files for Creation Kit, Mod Organizer, and TES5Edit.  IF I can access all three and get 'em to work, then I can finally resolve my need to rebuild NavMeshes on some Merged Mods, and then get solely back to Win10Pro.  Does ANYONE have any answers?   IF it's better to remove this from LoverLab, please use my E-mail address at the beginning of this message.  Thank you!!  Allen

I don't think that is possible. You can have the game twice, but you can't have it installed for both windows versions to use it.

After all, your game needs to be registered with Windows, and I've never heard that you can register any program to two versions of Windows at a time. (Or better, I've never heard of anyone ever trying something like that)

Oh and just for the record: CK decided to crash on me, when I try to load an esp file. Creating my own works fine, though. (Windows 7)

What I THINK I'm going to try is install Steam, Skyrim, CK all on the WIn7 drive.  Then, copy all of the mods from my Win10 Steam-Skyrim to my Win7 Steam-Skyrim.  IF I do it right, It SEEMS to me that I SHOULD be able to open the Merged-Mods.esp files (with ESM Masters) in Win7 CK and then just save them out.  Then, copy the resaved Merged-Mod.esp file back onto the Win10 Steam-Skyrim.  In my feeble brain, this should work correctly (as Steam, Skyrim, etc. will all be installed on two different operating systems on two different drives).  MY logic (and here I REALLY want someone to tell me whether my guess is right or wrong!!) is that, IF you were having problems with a file, you'd bring it to me on a thumb drive.  We'd copy it into my Steam-Skyrim installation, fix it, copy it back to your thumb drive, and off you'd go to your Steam-Skyrim.  So shouldn't that same logic happen if it's all on the same box, just on different drives and different operating systems?  Whaddya thing?

That works.

I'm literally doing the same, having Skyrim installed on Win7 and Win10 (exact same installation with all mods ENB and so on), and whenever I have to check if something works, I'm using my Windows 10 Skyrim, so I don't have to screw up my Win7 one. If it works, I'm just copying the stuff over. Saves me some time. Same, if I screw it up, I'll just get the folder from Win7 to 'repair' it agian.

So as long as you have the game installed on both Windows, that's no problem. You could even copy your loadorder and stuff over, if you copy the files in the hidden "Appdata/local/Skyrim" Folder in your user data, and off course savegames and inis from your userfiles.

I thought you were trying to use one gamefolder for 2 versions of Windows a a time. :D
