Clean New Game?

Recommended Posts

I've just been curious, say one playthrough is "dirty" from removing and adding mods that causes that playthrough to have CTD. Will actually playing a new game help it start fresh? Or it's best to do a clean re-install and pick your mods safely from there?

Basically, is new game a guaranteed "Clean" start?

Yes.

Unless your problem resides somewhere else (load order, incompatibility between mods, bad skyrim configuration, etc) wich will manifest in all your games, no matter if they are old or new ones. But if this is not the case then yes, a new game will always guarantee a clean start.

There are even lots of mods that wont work properly if you install them midgame, even when you only played 5 mins.

Ah I see. Thanks for the info. I assume LOOT is normally accurate in sorting files or should we be more careful in how LOOT handles load order?

I admit, I did install several mods mid-playthrough, even recently uninstalled one in dungeon (although the author assured that uninstalling his during gameplay was safe). Either way, I'm probably at fault for adding mods mid-playthrough.

Thanks for the help

Loot gives a hand, but regretably doesnt do magic. Too many mods are released everyday and Loot Master files cant  keep up with them. Besides, when two mods do the same thing to an object (for example an armor replacer) you are the only one who can decide wich one should prevail.

The best way to get a proper load order is to run loot and then take a look into it and manually move what ever you think (or know) its wrong.

Do not take my comment as a rule. There are mods that indicate as a requirement to start a new game (Apollo's Civil War mod for example), but others, even when the author does not recommended it, you can install them mid game and nothing goes wrong.

Usually the problematics are the ones that transforms landscapes, cities, or modifies quests, or adds many items and locations throughout the world, etc. Because when you play and your save game there is a chance your save contains information on things that those could contradict, overwrite, replace, modify, etc.

Followers, weapons and amor packs (unless they modify existing NPC by adding them gear) are usually safe to install when ever you want.

Textures and meshes (with no plugins) are also safe to both install and remove when ever you want.

Uninstalling a mod during a midgame is never recommended. This is not an exact forumla or rule, but there is always a small chance that might lead to problems. Using a save cleaner after doing it helps a lot.

Usually a good mid-way solution (when they allow it) is to turn them off in the MCM and just leave them there (installed but not active per say)
