Lately i've been thinking about making my own combat animations mod. What tools do i need apart from the CK? Are there any guides that i can look through?

There are plenty of guides here in LL that teaches you how to do animations, what tools you need, etc

Google / search them and you will find them.

In any case, your goal is pretty ambitious. Trying to learn how to do even the most simple animation like jumping in your own two feet is already challenging and time demanding. You should look at the guides and try something very simple, if you feel you manage well then try do a more complex one, and so on.

After (if) you get the hang of it then comes the easy part of replacing the default animations by yours.

I might be wrong, but i do not think you need CK at all.

I'm having no luck in getting advice here as a new animator...so I'm having to do a ton of trial and error techniques and research. Experienced animators here, with a few exceptions, guard their secrets closely. Tefajo couldn't be more correct by saying that animating for Skyrim is a daunting hobby to undertake. However it is immensely rewarding when things fall into place.

As far as what you'll need, one of following: Blender, 3DS Max 2010, or 3DS Max 2012. In addition, if you use 3DS Max, you will need to somehow locate a copy of Havok Content Tools 2010.2 for 3DS Max 2010, or HCT 2011.3 for 3DS Max 2012. The Havok Tools are insanely hard to come by at this point, since Microsoft discontinued the pcXs program.  And, I'm afraid to say...that because of this...animating in Skyrim is on its last hurrah.

Also, you will need a copy of the nif tools plugin. Take a look at the guides by CEO (VERY helpful) and pornphile. Look at Bergzores animation tutorial on Youtube. I wish you the best of luck in your quest. We can most certainly use more combat animations!

This is true, but he could always ask some animator to upload it somewhere for download.
