varenne Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Had to buy one of these recently, now that my XFX AMD Radeon HD 7850 fan crapped out, which may have something to do with the whole AMD driver fiasco, who knows. But it was getting just too f'in hot for my tolerance; I have a normal CPU and case heat of around 28 to 33 degrees C. I also ordered a ViewSonic XG2401 24-inch 144Hz 1080p Gaming Display with 1ms, HDMI, DisplayPort and FreeSync Technology I'm also wondering if anyone can recommend or know of a better heatsink/fan combo for this VID card: XFX AMD Radeon HD 7850 Looks like maybe my only option is GELID Solutions GC-VGA02-01 1 Ball, 1 Sleeve VGA Cooler or my preferred choice, ZALMAN VF700-CU 2 Ball VGA Cooler
lordofthedread Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 I live in a tropical country and I never had to use any additional heatsink for my GPU, choose a well made one to begin with, avoid GPU with passive coolers and don't overclock your cards, the gain is minimal anyway. It's been a while since I had an AMD GPU in my system so I can't really recommend them but I guess a R7 360 will be better thanh your old 7850 anyway (my wife owns a 7850 btw and it shows its limits in modern games like Witcher 3 while it plays smooth on my GTX760).
varenne Posted February 23, 2016 Author Posted February 23, 2016 Yeah, I have to admit to being a fan of ATI and hung in there post the AMD take over but Nvidia seems to be the future. I've never seen a need to OC my GPU and only rarely do it to my CPU; while rendering.
lordofthedread Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Well if you are planning to get a FreeSync monitor AMD seems the way to go and frankly they do have very good cards, the drivers seems to have improved also, but I would recommend to wait for their next release as they look like they will close the gap between AMD and Nvidia but only time will tell. In the meantime I am perfectly happy with my GPU but I won't say I will not go back to AMD when I do need to change it I was a big fan of AMD back in the day when they released the 9800 series, these cards were the absolute best raw GPU power available, since then, they did made very decent cards with the 6xxx and 7xxx series notably. I switched over to Nvidia quite recently actually and did not looked back because they were quite behinf mostly in the drivers department but it looks like it is changing from the latest drivers they released.
varenne Posted February 23, 2016 Author Posted February 23, 2016 I personally preferred the Omega drivers vs. those being produced by the ATI/AMD engineers. Sad they didn't or weren't able continue that. I will be receiving my FreeSync monitor tomorrow so we'll see how it together with the new card perform. Mostly I will just continue playing and modding Oblivion, so it doesn't need to scream. I prefer stability and optimization over excessively high frame rates anyways. Edit Received the new ViewSonic monitor today and I have to say WOW! What a difference in not just games but Windows and all other apps. A screen resolution of 1920 X 1080 is phreaking awesome. No lag or tearing in the couple of games I've tested out so far with FreeSync. It was a bit of a bear to setup, mostly just reading and finding where the bloody hell ViewSonic had the FreeSync setup and settings hidden. And then had to manually install the driver for it via Device Manager. Only thing I'm not too fond of, no remote for the monitor. Everything is accessed from a set of small buttons on the bottom-front of the screen.
