Lag issue, even on new game

Recommended Posts

So, I had a great setup with quite a bit of sexlab stuff working great.

I figured I would add soulgem oven and creature framework and well, most of the stuff related to creatures and stuff.

Loaded up skyrim, started a new game, and... the game runs super choppy, I tried to one by one disable all the stuff I installed and its still doing it.

I tried doing a papyrus log like it says in the sticky thread, the game made a LOG folder but nothing in it, I have no missing conflicting mods according to LOOT.

Super frustrated, with my limited knowledge of fixing stuff, I feel tempted to just clear out the whole game and start over but that would take FOREVER, hopefully someone can give me some insight'

Sorry if I'm a dummy and missing something obvious :(

I edited to add my load order just in case it is helpful.

I have heard of SOS having some script impact, and it is likely that among the many mods you have there are some (too-heavy) scripts running.

Since you indicate no change in graphical settings, I would assume your lag has to do with processing (of these scripts).

Many times processing lag in Skyrim can be solved with .ini settings (rather than buying a new proc). The creator of Frostfall (script lag from HELL but great for immersion) indicated this, and has some general advice:

In order to increase the amount of CPU time and memory given to the script system, you can try the following. This may increase performance.

[Papyrus]
fUpdateBudgetMS=800.0
fExtraTaskletBudgetMS=800.0
fPostLoadUpdateTimeMS=2000.0
iMinMemoryPageSize=256
iMaxMemoryPageSize=512
iMaxAllocatedMemoryBytes=153600

If that does not seem to fix the problem, you can try this as well. This is mostly a default configuration, with extra time given to the Update Budget values.

[Papyrus]
fUpdateBudgetMS=20.0
fExtraTaskletBudgetMS=20.0
fPostLoadUpdateTimeMS=500.0
iMinMemoryPageSize=128
iMaxMemoryPageSize=512
iMaxAllocatedMemoryBytes=76800

Note that I personally use the latter with great results; the former is way too goddamn overkill in my experience. But then my computer has 8 cores at 4.0.

If you're having trouble and think it may not be scripts, you can install frostfall and load a game, wander around in the snow, and see if frostfall doesn't warn you about not being able to keep up with what you're doing because of script lag.

Also, if you've UNINSTALLED things you may have unattached scripts lying around running the hell outta your proc. In that case use PDT http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/53045/? or savetool (google it, I don't use it but it's simpler) to analyze your save and see if you have a few hundred running.

One last note, if you've changed shadow settings it may have an effect; but it doesn't sound like this is your issue. If you think it might be, see posts 84 (non-enb) and 90 (enb) here: http://forum.step-project.com/topic/3758-shadow-optimization/page-6

I may have misinterpreted Envy's description of the problem, but the way I understood it, the issue is low framerate, not slow-reacting scripts. With that in mind, the benefit of increasing fUpdateBudgetMS and fExtraTaskletBudgetMS above the default values (1.2 ms) is to improve script responsiveness at the expense of framerate, so these INI edits would be highly counter-productive in this specific case, and only serve to make the problem worse.

Chesko recommends these edits because Frostfall is very script-heavy and increasing the values will allow the mod to react more quickly to state changes, such as the player approaching a campfire and receiving heat from it. However, the principle here is simple: the more CPU time you give to the Papyrus script engine, the less CPU time is left for the rest of the game. (rendering frames, physics calculations, updating actors, etc)

Yes, the problem is low framerate, I know it is not from SoS because that was one of the things working fine previously, also I know its not my save game, as I stated this is an issue that is occuring on even NEW saves.

I'm assuming that one of the mods I installed somehow broke a mod that was working fine before, even though I use NMM, and installed/uninstalled the mods through that.

Editing to add: In case it is relevant I have 16gb of DDR3 ram, an i5 (quad core) running at 4.3ghz, an nvidia gtx 680 w/ 4gb of video ram. Running windows 10.

NMM is good enough for light modding, but if you end up reinstalling Skyrim to fix the issue, I'd recommend giving Mod Organizer a try. It installs mods into a folder separate from Skyrim and has the game load load them at runtime, keeping your Skyrim install clean and immune to unexpected disasters.

How exactly does that work? Ive heard people talk about how you can have multiple profiles with MO, but wouldnt that end up taking up a lot more space?

Depends. For new files added by mods, the disk space taken is the same as installing the mod directly into the Skyrim folder, but for overwrite mods like mesh/texture replacers, then yes, MO would end up taking up more space as it stores the replacer files in a separate location while Skyrim gets to keep its unmodded files. Though I suppose this only applies if you've unpacked Bethesda BSAs and have meshes/textures as loose files.

As I understand it, too many scripts can cause low framerate. If the scripts get backed up, that won't help. I could be wrong; it just doesn't sound like a graphics issue (with those mods that were mentioned).

If Envy installed textures mods or something then that's another issue, and probably the culprit.

MO is hands down better. NMM (in the past) would screw your file system up by overwriting files but not replacing them with other mods' files when removed. Hopefully they fixed this, but MO definitely doesn't do this.

Yes, the issue I'm having IS probably script related, thats why I cant understand how it persisted after removing the mods that caused it, I guess I probably will reinstall, and I probably will use Mod Organizer, but HDD space might be an issue, my installation is already pretty huge, and I only have so much space on my SSD, I suppose if MO installs mods to a virtual folder I could use my storage drive, but windows likes putting that one to sleep if its "idle" causing things to freeze up when it decides it needs something from it.
