MO question

When I install mod on MO, it sometimes say data missing at top level. Do I just ignore it or do I need to move the files in the mod around?

You just need to set the data directory by right clicking it and choosing set data directory.

What about the mods that have data folder and inside that folder is another data folder? Are these the ones I need to move out of the first data folder?

You need to have the top level of the mod be the files that would go in the /skyrim/data directory, basically the esp or esm if there is one should be in the top level. So if a mod's zip file is named "TheMod" and inside the file is a directory named "TheMod" and inside that is a directory named "data", that last folder needs to be the data directory.

 

As for mods if there's a data folder inside another data folder, do you mean there are files inside the first data folder? If not, just make the second data folder the data directory. If so, I suppose the only reason that would be the case is if there are optional files to install but the mod doesn't use an installer. In that case you'll have to manually copy the optional files you want into the main directory, you can just drag and drop in the filetree after installing a mod or right click the mod entry, choose open in explorer and drag and drop the files from there.

Simple rule:

 

* If the zip of the mod has no main directory (the esp is at the top level), then MO will handle for you without any problem.

* If the zip has as main folder a "Data" folder, then MO will handle for you directly

* If the mod has some other files (like documentation, readme, etc.) and then a sub-directory with the actual mod content, then MO will tell you that a "Data" folder is missing. In this case, just expand the mod tree (in the MO installation window), until you will find a folder that contains the ESP file (usually it is called Data, but not always.) Right click on it, and select "Use as Data directory.
