gokuzeny Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 I haven't played my fallout nv in a few months and went to play it recently and it starts up fine as far as the game goes, but i get just a black screen, i can hear the menu music and even the main menu start so the game isn't crashing it just doesn't show anything. I am at my wits end, I could not find any solution to this, all the solutions i found were for crashes which is not the case here. Any help would be appreciated.
Anatriax Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 Chances are you're missing masters. Run LOOT, look for errors (Ignore cleaning errors)If nothing:Run FNVEdit and watch for errors. Fix the errors Rebuild bashed patch. Try again.
gokuzeny Posted August 4, 2015 Author Posted August 4, 2015 As I said in my op the game is NOT freezing or crashing, when I hear the menu come up and move my mouse around it makes the normal sounds you get when your mouse hovers over menu items. also FNV Edit gives no errors nor does LOOT. Also I should note that I am not using any ENB nor have i changed my load order or mods in a while.
Anatriax Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 Do you use Mod Organizer? If so does the game launch fine outside of Mod Orgainzer? If so, that will help you narrow down whether it's a mod causing the problem, or if it's the game itself. IF you do not use Mod Organizer, or the game launches fine from OUTSIDE of MO:1) Disable ALL plugins (yes, all of them, except VANILLA plugins) 2) Enable them ONE at a time. When you get the black screen, you have your problem mod.IF it does NOT launch fine from outside of MO: 1) Go to games library in Steam 2) Right click on FNV and go to properties 3) click on "Local Files" tab 4) Verify Integrity of Game Cache You obviously have a mod somewhere that is causing a problem, and since you haven't provided a mod list or load order, it's going to be hard for us to help you determine what that might be. So you're going to have to do the legwork the right way
Tepi Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 I had the same problem a few weeks ago with newest version of MO. Game had a black screen even with 0 mods loaded, pretty much everything was vanilla except of nvse. After a while I had enough and manually installed everything which is bad but atleast it works Only later I thought what if it was because of MO version but haven't tried again. I used to have 1.2.13 or something before and with that it did work. ps. Yes, I do mean just the game and official dlc enabled. +nvse.
gokuzeny Posted August 5, 2015 Author Posted August 5, 2015 I do have MO but I only use it for skyrim, I use nexus mod manager for fallout, also Anatriax I mentioned that I have not changed my mods in a while and its worked fine all that time before I took a break so It couldn't be any mods, makes no sense that a load order that's worked perfectly fine for at least 5 or 6 months would suddenly cause this. So no its not obviously a mod, I remember oblivion had a similar problem back in the day and it turned out to be a graphics issue with lighting or something, cant remember for sure. Point is something else had to have changed. The only significant change I can think of is I upgraded to windows 10, so not sure if that messed something up or not, and before anyone asks yes I did try compatibility mode.
Guest Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 Me too I feel it's something with the graphic. Do you remember if you were running a ENB? Some time ago there was a post in some forum titled "ENB doesn't work on Windows 10", I didn't take care to read it, and I do believe that if there was a problem with ENB and Win 10 they managed to solve it in some way. But you just upgraded and you didn't change anything, so maybe it could deserve to check if the ENB is the source of the problem? EDIT: ENB or more in general any d3d9 in the game folder

Guest Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 By the way what happens if you ShowRaceMenu? something appears or it's still completely black? if it's black, I would really feel to exclude a mod causes it, and would more inclined to a problem to the game / graphic / enb.
gokuzeny Posted August 5, 2015 Author Posted August 5, 2015 not to be rude but It doesn't seem like you guys are really reading my posts, I said its black at the main menu, but I still get the normal music and menu sounds, also I mentioned im not using an ENB, however that's not entirely true and I apologize for that as I forgot I was using ENBoost, but that is basically just a vram optimizer the way its set up.
Guest Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 did you try to remove the d3d9? also, does console show up correctly? did you try clicking some random option on the menu? something changes or everything's still dark?
Anatriax Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 I do have MO but I only use it for skyrim, I use nexus mod manager for fallout, also Anatriax I mentioned that I have not changed my mods in a while and its worked fine all that time before I took a break so It couldn't be any mods, makes no sense that a load order that's worked perfectly fine for at least 5 or 6 months would suddenly cause this. Not to be rude, but: 1) Not changing your mods doesn't meant hat one of them hasn't broken. It happens. I've gone a few days without playing and everything was fine, didn't change ANYTHING. NO. Nothing. Not my operating system, not my antivirus. Nothing. Came back to a game that wouldn't start. --Just because you didn't change it doesn't mean it didn't break-- 2) go with what AJ said and remove d3d9.dll. Try the injector version. I've read that d3d9.dll is broken for Win 10 as well (both here and on STEP) The workaround I've seen is to use the injector version, or upgrade to the newest build of Windows 10 (Some have said that the most recent build works with d3d9) On a side note: You came here asking for help. The least you could do is try the suggestions. To be fair, it seems like you're not really reading our posts, either. AJ for one, has been around the block multiple times with Fallout. PRETTY sure he knows what he's talking about. Myself? I mod several Bethesda games, and write guides to mod them (pretty complex guides, if you've ever taken a look through). We are both offering you sound advice, and fairly common suggestions that you're not even willing to try. So why even ask for the help?
Guest Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 Oh I forgot. If you have NVAC, remove it temporarily

I was reading your posts but i had tried all that before (i did mention I searched it before coming here), thats the reason I came here for help. I do apologize though, I realize you are just trying to help and it is appreciated, I guess I was just letting my frustration get the best of me. I will try removing the d3d9 and see what happens. On another note I do have the latest windows 10 so if this turns out to be the case then that means they broke it again.
gokuzeny Posted August 5, 2015 Author Posted August 5, 2015 I did notice those links to your guides, ill take a look at them.
gokuzeny Posted August 5, 2015 Author Posted August 5, 2015 ok new update, just tried without d3d9 and bam I can see the menu again so looks like I might need to use the injector as you suggested, but first im going to see if theres any new updates for windows.
gokuzeny Posted August 5, 2015 Author Posted August 5, 2015 ok so there was indeed an update but it didnt fix the issue so now I have got to try the injector. Thank you guys for all your help you did have good advice and I am very sorry I got snippy with you and I am sorry I didnt seem very appreciative. I really am very grateful.
Anatriax Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 It happens, Gokuzeny Just remember: We all get frustrated when it comes to modding. Even the best of us. I'm fairly sure the injector solution will work for you. If not, try installing the DirectX runtime's that come with Skyrim, and see if that helps fix d3d9.dll. If I recall, Windows 10 is now on DX12, and it doesn't have many components of DX9 left in it, so you'll have to install DX9 separately.
gokuzeny Posted August 5, 2015 Author Posted August 5, 2015 ahh great idea, ill try that first, but in the event I still need to use the injector , how would I do so with fnv4gb, do I just put the ENBInjector.exe in the exe folder and thats it ? I have never used the injector version of any ENB before.
gokuzeny Posted August 5, 2015 Author Posted August 5, 2015 also where do I find the runtime that came with skyrim, I could only find the c++ one.
Anatriax Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 1) should just be able to run the injector and it will work. No questions asked. Run it from the FNV root folder, just to be safe.2) FNV root folder > Redists > DirectX > DXSetup
gokuzeny Posted August 6, 2015 Author Posted August 6, 2015 ok ill give it a try thank you, will let you know how it goes.
Imperfection Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 Just to confirm what Anatriax said the 4GB launcher should work with the injector or the wrapper version I use this one and at the bottom of the mod description page (FAQ) section it says works with both http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/55061/?
gokuzeny Posted August 7, 2015 Author Posted August 7, 2015 ok the directx from skyrim didn't fix it but the injector worked nicely so I will have to use that for now, thank you all for the help, hopefully they fix the d3d9 issue cuz its a bit annoying to have to remember to run the injector lol.
Vortec Posted August 8, 2015 Posted August 8, 2015 I had a similar problem after updating to WIn10, i just ran steam verify files fixed it.
