Trying to change the hair of Custom/Mod NPCs?

So I'm trying to change the hair of an esp based custom NPC that I downloaded using the CK.

 

In order I'm selecting -

 

Skyrim.esm

Update.esm

The hair mod that has the hair I want (SG hair)

and then finally the follower .esp set as the active file

 

Only problem is not ony does the CK not render the follower properly in the preview, it doesn't show the hairs from the mod in the headparts dropdown when I try to edit it.

 

Can anyone give me some advice or direction? I can provide more info if necessary.
