NNS10 Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 ############################################################################ Note: I have posted answers and findings to my questions below in the second post. ############################################################################ I'm currently playing Skyrim and am considering switching to FNV since I like the setting more and I hear the world is more reactive. Problem is I'm having trouble finding centralized information on mods, so I'm hoping are familiar with the FNV modding scene can share their knowledge. I have a comprehensive list of questions, and if they all get answered, maybe this would be pin worthy? (I'm surprised there's no informational thread that is pinned). 1) Finding Mods One thing I'm noticing is it seems to be a lot harder to find mods for FNV, unless I'm looking in the wrong places. 1a) Is it correct that there is no equivalent to Skyrim Gems or STEP for FNV? I found those to be invaluable when starting Skyrim to quickly identify useful mods. 1b) It seems nexus has far less mods for FNV than Skyrim. Are there other modding repositories besides nexus and LL for FNV? VGU? Without a Skyrim Gems-type site and a central definitive repository for FNV mods, I'm finding it very difficult to have enough information to what mods I should be getting. Or are there a lot of nice mods that just haven't been posted on english sites? Some great Skyrim mods on nexus are by japanese modders (e.g. ECE, BTRH's follower mods). Maybe they just didn't share on nexus for FNV? Are there major japanese repositories for FNV mods? 1c) Are there big community sites for FNV mods? For Skyrim, I often visit Dragonporn and then modtype. Are there similar sites for FNV? 1d) Is there a site like TESGeneral with a guide summarizing the numerous quality mods for different categories (ENB, Gameplay, VIsuals, etc)? http://www.tesgeneral.com/#!skyrim-guide/c22o0 http://www.tesgeneral.com/#!waifu/ch1j 2) Recommended Mods (character visuals) I've found a few personal listings of modding lists, but they have been mostly on the gameplay side. I've having more trouble on the character customization mods, and this took time on Skyrim as well to learn what was out there (the TESgeneral site would've been a great shortcut if I had learned of it earlier though). 2a) Body Mods What are the two mods common and widely supported body mods? I've done some digging and came across a lot: Type 3, Type 3M, Type 6M, BoG, BnB... Skyrim also has a lot of variations, but if you want armor support, it generally comes down to either CBBE or UNP/B. Then there are many UNP variants like UNPC, UNPCM, UNPBO, 7B, etc. But ultimately what gets the most support is UNP/B. How is it for FNV? There looks to be a lot of variants, but which ones get the most support? 2b) Hair When I searched, I saw a lot of different hair mods, but are there some very large compilations that are pretty much a staple hair mod to have? In Skyrim, that would be SkyHair and SG Hairs (yes, I know that's been deleted). Does FNV have anything similar? 2c) Face Editing From what I've read, the in-game face editor doesn't produce accurate results. Do people use GECK to do it instead? (In Skyrim, using the CK for that doesn't work out very well) 2d) Face Mods Are there replacement heads or morphs that are used for some nice looking faces? The screenshots for the Synx face textures for moonshadow race look quite nice, but is that only possible with the MoonShadow Race? Or does using the head06 mesh do the same thing? Are there any other good head meshes? (I use the ECE meshes in Skyrim, so that's my preference) 2e) Body and Face Texture sets Is there a list of staple quality full body/face texture mods for the common body types? I saw some face textures, but without full set of body/face textures, you'll end up with neck seams. In Skyrim, it would be texture sets like SG Female Texture Renewal, Mature Skin, Realistic Girls, or Barbarian / Milk Drinker. What are the options in FNV?
NNS10 Posted July 5, 2014 Author Posted July 5, 2014 These are the answers or conclusions I've come to regarding my questions in the first post. This also includes helpful tips that I've learned the hard way. Until this is moved to the first post, considering this incomplete. I am still very much learning my way around New Vegas modding. 1) Finding Mods There doesn't seem to be any Skyrim GEMS equivalent site. The modding community around Fallout seems to be smaller than both Skyrim and Oblivion. However, I have found this STEP-like guide, which I found to be very helpful in identifying important mods to consider getting: http://wiki.step-project.com/User:Essarrbee/FalloutNewVegas Also, due to compatibility issues being more problematic in the Fallout engine (compared to Skyrim), the guide is useful in helping with installation steps to resolve compatibility issues, especially when it comes to UI mods. 2) Recommended Mods (character visuals) 2a) Body Mods The most prevalent seem to be Type 3 and Type 6, in terms of armor. Note that Type 3 can also have unlabeled variations. For Type 3, I very much prefer the variants with narrowed shoulders. exeter's Type 3 armor conversions also use the narrow mesh shoulder. 2b) Hair An important thing to note about hair is you can only have ONE hair mod running at a time. This is a big difference if you're coming from Skyrim. Note: If you're using Fallout Character Overhaul or New Vegas Redesigned, make sure the load order has the Ling esm load AFTER the FCO and Redesigned esms. And if you use Ling's Pretty things esp (for npc overhaul), make sure that loads before the FCO and Redesigned esps. The two biggest hair packs are Mikoto's Beauty Pack and Ling's Coiffure. There's also Cazy's hair, which is smaller. Between Mikoto's and Ling's, I personally think Mikoto's hairs are better--Ling's hairs have a lot of clipping and other quality issues. HOWEVER, numerous custom races utilize Ling's Coiffure, so your choice may be driven by the custom races used. To use more than one hair pack requires creating a combined esp that merges the hair entries (you still obviously need the hairs and meshes from each pack). zzjay has created a great compilation using Ling's Coiffure as a base: zzjay's hairshop 2c) Face Editing Something to be aware off right off the bat: the in-game character editor is near worthless. The in-game face editor (showracemenu) does not reflect how your character actually looks, and if you run a custom race, it will be very obvious how different they look. For a proper face editor, you will need to use GECK (the creation kit for Fallout/New Vegas) and save the face as a preset into an esp. NOTE: If you use an ENB, make sure to move the dlls out of the root Fallout New Vegas directory and into a temporary folder before running GECK. If not, GECK will constantly crash when you attempt to view the face. This took me forever to figure out. 2d) Face Mods I don't have much to say here. There are custom heads, but most are part of custom races. Mojave Delight and Moonshadow race are two popular ones I'm aware of. 2e) Body and Face Texture sets I have some comments here regarding textures, but I don't have much to offer as far as lists of mods go. Custom races often come with their own custom textures (this will only affect that custom race). Body mods may also come with their own textures. Note: There will be an unavoidable seam between the body and head--Kendo 2 explained this is the game's fault due to how the body parts are weighted. I have also experienced significant mismatches in color between the head and body, even when using a full texture set for the body and head. This was quite frustrating and I ended up using a custom race, which seemed to alleviate the issue. This may have had something to do with the race's custom head mesh. As for actual texture set mods, I have not used enough to recommend many. However, Kendo 2's custom textures are excellent and what I currently use. They are the same textures used in the Mojave Delight custom race.
Guest Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 My answers to that: 1a - Not that I'm aware, and maybe I'm not aware because I prefer finding mods on my own on Nexus, digging, reading description, trying. Nexus is still the biggest repository, for FONV too, so it's pretty rare not finding something out there. Just select a category and order by endorsement, you will see which are the most used mods. Since the number is smaller (see 1b), it doesn't take a lot of digging. 1b - Definetely less mods and modders, but in general, not only on Nexus, that's the culprit of everything. Other places I know are moddb and modgames.net, then there are some minor ones like vgu or even tesalliance has a (almost dead) fallout section. Once I did some digging in google and I found a ton of places, but problem is they were all outdated: if on a website people don't write a post about Fallout since 2011, I doubt it deserves to look for new mods. 1c and 1d - see 1b "definetely less mods and modders", my explanation to everything. 2a - I would say type 3 and type 6. Variants are not a great deal, I mean when you wear a metal armor it's really hard to notice if your shoulders are slightly less wide or your back is a little more curvy, reason why I could mix up them and not notice a good difference. Unless you look for skimpy armors and clothes, in that case the main concern is the UV, but so many share the same UV, solving a nice problem. But excluding the super exagerated busty armors, my guess is it doesn't care a lot if you mix up different armors and clothes when they share the same UV. Then you can use a compatible skeleton with more bones (Astymma compatability skeleton), a body weighted for it (some type 3 / type 6, both weighted for BnB) and add some specific animations: you'll have BnB, exactly the same system used in Skyrim (BBP or TBBP, not HDT). But there's no FNIS to install here. Also, not all the armors are always converted, just like in Skyrim. Still I would say Type 3 and Type 6 are those I mostly see around. 2b - Lings and Mikoto are the biggest I know. Sometimes there are some limitations in using hair in specific cases (i.e. custom races), but it's not bad to learn how to mix up hair in GECK so you can create your own personal compilation. 2c - That's pretty bad in my opinion, the ingame character creation, and very limited. I use GECK when I want more parameters, yes. 2d - Take a look at my favourite one, that's the one I always use and I'm pretty much in love with it... I can play vanilla but I really must at least install this one... Mojave Delight / Delighted, you can find it on Nexus for both FO3 and NV. It's custom race, face, body replacer, nails, some awesome tattoo and make up. Generally neck seam is pretty bad in NV, it's very hard to handle, definetely more than Skyrim in my opinion. So it's a nice habit using chains and collars to hide / conceal it. 2e - Nothing like the wonderful Skyrim texture all in one packages, unfortunately. But look at 2d, I'm sure you'll find a good compromise.
Halstrom Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Basically Fantasy has always been more popular then Post Apocalyptic stuff, more so with the Female of the Species too
NNS10 Posted July 5, 2014 Author Posted July 5, 2014 Thanks, appreciate the information. I also found a STEP-like assortment of mods to help me identify all the must-have fixes, tweaks, UI mods, etc. Once I have those "basics," that's when I enjoy digging around on nexus to find new things to add. I'm also trying to get the "basics" of character mods down too. 2e - Nothing like the wonderful Skyrim texture all in one packages, unfortunately. But look at 2d, I'm sure you'll find a good compromise. What's 2d? 2d - Take a look at my favourite one, that's the one I always use and I'm pretty much in love with it... I can play vanilla but I really must at least install this one... Mojave Delight / Delighted, you can find it on Nexus for both FO3 and NV. It's custom race, face, body replacer, nails, some awesome tattoo and make up. As for Mojave Delight, that certainly looks nice. Like Moonshadow, it's also a custom race. Is this some limitation in FNV? Could I just install the body type and textures the custom race uses (so I can avoid issues with custom hairs) ? Or is there something more to it that I wouldn't get?
Guest Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 I was meaning the point 2d, where I speak about Mojave Delight: it comes with everything ready, head mesh, hair, manicure, texture... There are no limitations in FNV. You can install the body type you want, Mojave Delight (or another custom race you prefer) and stick with its hairstyle (Cool Hair for Mojave Delight are amazing in my opinion) + vanilla hair. If you want more custom hairstyle, it's probable you have to open and modify the esp with the GECK
Nergui Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 Anyone know if there are FNV versions of these mods From Skyrim - Trash bucket, removes items from your inventory http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/41776/?
NNS10 Posted July 6, 2014 Author Posted July 6, 2014 Some questions on female body types: A) Is the Beware of Girl Type 3 body the same exact mesh as the regular Type 3 body with with higher resolution textures? Or does the BoG mesh have narrowed shoulders? (BoG has credits to a mod that does narrowed shoulders and idle animations) B.1) The Type 6 body is hidden on nexus. Is Type 6M considered the de facto successor? B.2) Are there vanilla and DLC armor replacements for Type 6M? I saw this mod, but the filesize is too small compared to the assortment of Type 3 vanilla/DLC armor replacements by exeter. Edit: Another question came to mind... a rather important one. Anyone use Fallout Character Overhaul and New Vegas Redesigned 3 with custom body, texture, and hair mods? Does it cause any conflicts? ModOrganizer is indicating overwriting is occurring. Edit 2: Is it true FNV only supports one hair mod at a time? I saw this in zzjay's readme for her Demoness hair mod: Since fallout ONLY supports one hairmod at a time, including compliations like mikotos (cause tey edit the race in the proces of adding)it's wiser for you to just mak abig one compliation with all your hairs
Guest Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 I suggest you to download them packages and check by yourself, taste in body is pretty subjective. Anyway that armor mod you linked for type 6m is ok. You can also find custom clothes here in LL (wasteland clothes compilation, is VERY big and it is converted for many type 3 variants and type 6) To avoid the hair problem there are some patches sometimes (like to merge Mikoto and Lings), anyway as I suggested and as zzjay suggests it isn't bad if you make your own compilation using the GECK concerning your taste
NNS10 Posted July 6, 2014 Author Posted July 6, 2014 Hm... I installed the Anthony Ling pack along with the Moonshadow elves race. The hairs in the Ling pack are pretty bad... I don't see anything like the ones from the screenshots on the mod page. Did I do something wrong or is that how the Ling pack is? As a side note, the Type 3 shoulders look terrible and really blocky. Again, am I doing something wrong or is that how it should be? I came across a few random threads about Archive Invalidation, but is that something I need to worry about? I use ModOrganizer and turned on the Automatic Archive Invalidation feature. Not sure if or how it works though.

If you want more custom hairstyle, it's probable you have to open and modify the esp with the GECK After messing with a bunch of different races, I think I'm going to settle on Mojave Delight. Does GECK also have the same issue with not displaying the faces accurately? When I look in GECK, it also seems to have almost a fisheye appearance compared to the screenshot on the mod page (or maybe #1, Preset 1 just looks incredibly bad): http://static-3.nexusmods.com/15/mods/130/images/44312-4-1318099554.jpg Just trying to determine whether GECK is an accurate representation before I start messing around to make a new preset. Would be a terrible waste of time if I found out it GECK also looks different from the actual face in-game. Or are there better presets from some of the Mojave Delight addons?
Guest endgameaddiction Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 Best way to edit a face is by FaceGen in the GECK. If, you don't run into GECK crashes like me. There is no equivalent mod that enhances the presets more than the sliders of the basic face editing in game. I'm assuming that Fallout 4 will have a similar character editing like Skyrim's and by then there with bee a RM or ECE like mod to enhance it. If you decide not to go with the FaceGen in GECK, only other option is to find a beauty race mod for Fallout New Vegas, which there are a few; Desert Succubus and Mojave Delight. Or you can even go with Daughter of Ares if you don't mind being a pretty female android. All these can be found on Nexus.

Killikrates~2014 Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 There is a STEP Pack for FNV, Fear & Loathing in New Vegas by EssArrBee. There is a support thread as well, and SRB is quite active in maintaining it, DDSopt instructions are due to be added soon. A Tale of Two Wastelands is also in the works.
