Kodiak Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 OK, I usually stay away from bringing shit like this into forums, but, this one time I'm crossing that line. Right now this is largely a US problem but I ask that our European and Asian members take a look as well. As for US users, take a look... [video=vimeo] This isn't about if censorship is right or wrong and its not about sticking one to the government. This is about making sure we don't allow the net to be used as an excuse to have an open season on shutting down any site that could be considered a sharing site. Everyone is affcted by this. This isn't just about Youtube and Facebook. Even tiny sites like us here at LoversLab can get caught by this act becuase some of the links that are floating around these boards. The link below will allow US citizens to petition and allow those not in the US to voice thier opinion to the correct department. Even if you don't trust the link, pass the word on about this bullshit and dig up your own research, check for yourself. http://americancensorship.org/
Blackbryre Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 I just saw this on the reddit blackout page. Good to see someone else sharing this stuff.
Jerbsinator Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 Ya there are a few websites participating in this blackout including: Reddit Imgur Wikipedia Google (to some degree) among MANY others http://sopastrike.com/
kevanlol Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 I just hope I can finish downloading the entire internet before it happens. I am only about .004% there.
The Matrix Prime Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 I just hope I can finish downloading the entire internet before it happens. I am only about .004% there. Haha, ditto!
Triratna Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 I can't wait for the next goverment election..
ToJKa Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 On the positive side, Microsoft and some other big corporations oppose this, so it's not hopeless. Also the blackout has caused many supporters of those bills to change their sides. If does get trough... Well, it was a nice internet we had once
Archivemaster Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 WOOOT! SOPA and PIPA shelved! http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2012/01/internet-wins-sopa-and-pipa-both-shelved.ars But keep your eyes peeled looks like they want to come back under new names =/
Cathal Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 Google moved and threatened to do a blackout on all of their services and this bullshit of a legislation immediately gets shelved, way to go Big G
Reigor Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 Pressure still needs to be kept up though. Bills like these won't go away unless alternative solutions are found to the Media piracy (both online and off) problems. Serious money is being lost, not only to big business (Hollywood, Game Studios, Record Labels, etc..) but more importantly in taxes that would go to the US Government's coffers. A new business model needs to be found that allows the content creators to compensated for their efforts while keeping the Internet open and free of Censorship and interference.
Dreamer102 Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 If they want to make their money, they need to lower prices for games, movies, music and theater (and all the other overpriced crap-assed items for sale). If people can't afford these things...of course they will naturally TAKE them. This country (usa) is run on greed...yeesh.
