Ethnic Diversity System & Traits

Ethnic Diversity System & Traits
Expand Carnalitas with an enhanced character trait system, culture-based trait distribution, additional traits, and new character interactions that give you greater control over traits and fetishes throughout the game world.

This submod introduces a culture-based distribution system that makes certain traits more common or rare among different culture groups, alongside tools to manage and customize characters across your realm.

Screenshots in spoiler on bottom of page.

Why this mod?
When starting a game, I noticed not every adult game character is assigned a gender trait.

I created this submod to address this by introducing decisions that allow you to remove and reapply Carnalitas traits to characters throughout the game world. The new ethnic diversity system determines the probability of receiving certain traits based on the character's culture group.

Features (see screenshots)

  • Enhanced Trait Distribution – Improve trait assignment for living adult characters at game start, with tools to reapply traits throughout the game world.
  • Ethnic Diversity System – Introduces culture-group-based trait probabilities, making certain traits more common or rare depending on the character's culture group.
  • Five New Fertility & flavour Traits – Expands the existing trait selection with five additional (no random creation or non-inheritable) traits.  The 5 traits are meant as a quick buff for offspring for the player.
  • Custom Character Interactions – Add, change, or remove supported traits and fetishes directly from individual characters.
  • World-Wide Trait Management – Use decisions to remove and reapply traits to characters throughout the game world, allowing you to update trait distribution whenever you choose.

How to Install?
Unzip the files in:

C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Crusader Kings III\mod\

How to use?
Important: Applying traits to a large number of characters can temporarily freeze the game. On my PC, the process takes approximately five seconds. Performance may vary depending on your system and game state.

  • Run "Remove ALL Carnalitas Traits".

This removes the existing Carnalitas traits assigned through the original 20% chance system.
The decision "Remove Bad Carnalitas Traits" is also available as a fallback if needed.

  • Run "Reapply Carnalitas Male Traits".

This reapplies the appropriate traits to eligible male characters using the new ethnic distribution system.
This reapplies the appropriate traits to eligible female characters using the same system.

  • Run "Reapply Carnalitas Female Traits".

Once both decisions have finished, your characters should have their traits assigned according to the new ethnic distribution logic shown in the screenshots.

Maintaining trait distribution
Optional: Rerun the two reapplication decisions occasionally if you notice adult characters who are missing their expected traits.
Optional – Coming of Age: Run "Reapply Coming of Age Male Traits" and "Reapply Coming of Age Female Traits" twice a year if characters reaching adulthood are not receiving their expected gender traits.

These decisions target characters between the ages of 16 and 19 and apply the same ethnic distribution logic.

Compatibility & Requirements
Required: Carnalitas.

*FAQ*

Spoiler

Q: Can I reupload this mod to another site?
A: No, you may not. The mod is intended to be exclusively available on LoverLabs.

If you do however upload it somewhere else, you will be in violation of the international Intellect Property Law and I can sue you :). Daddy needs some new shoes and a shiny new belt buckle anyway...

Q: Is it savegame compatible?

A: Yes, as long as the savegame was created with Carnalitas enabled.

Q: Do the portraits change upon removing/adding or changing gender traits?
A: Yes, see screenshot and otherwise try it yourself :).

Q: I'm 10 years into the game and I see characters without Carnalitas Gender Traits.
A: Use the "Coming of Age" decision twice a year for the first 15 years, to make sure that everyone will get a trait assigned based on the Ethnic system (otherwise Carnalitas will handle it anyway, so the Decisions are optional).

Q: Your mod conflicts with another mod of mine, will you patch it?
A: No, unless you're willing to pay my hourly coder fee. As then it won't be a hobby anymore, but a job.
(And it's very unlikely my mod is causing it, play with you load-order.)

Q: Running a decision froze/crashed my game, will you split the decisions so my potato can run it?
A: See the first sentance of the answer of the previous question :).

Q: Do you plan on integrating the "Bad" traits as well?
A: See the first sentance of the answer of the previous question :).

Q: Are you going to implement new features?
A: I've not planned any for the moment, hence the release.
But given I started with a simple Ethnic system, I ended up with a lot more functions lol, so never say never.

Q: How long do you plan on maintaining this mod?
A: For as long as I play the game and where it's necessary with Game / Carnalitas updates.

Q: Any chance for me to "buy me a coffee"?
A: A noble, friendly and unnecessary gesture, donate to this website instead to keep it running.

Please don't lol, use the forum for it :).
(Do note, I will only implement or change features that I'm planning on using myself).

I know this is annoying, but you should probably rename the directory and mod-file so we know what it is instead of your handle-name.

Posted (edited)

Yeah you're right though (kinda forgot about that).
Gimme a minute to do it.

It was more or less my "project name" given I had not yet decided to release it or not and how to name it lol.

EDIT: All done :).

So, genetics don't matter?

For the entire mod: Yes, genetics plays a big role based on the Ethnic system.
For the 5 additional fertility traits: no, the genetics don't matter, kids will  not inherit those traits, nor will they be randomly created.

I kind of figured I would get that question one way or another, turns out when re-reading it, by adding that sentence, I might have confused more people.
Edited the text, hopefully it's now more clearer for everyone what I mean by it.

This uses a significant amount of processing power. I’m noticing my CPU usage spike since using this mod. I go from 10% to 50-60% when i simply right click a character, is this normal? And no Im not using a 'potato'. Should it be running checks whenever I right click a character?

Posted (edited)

Well, we can debate what is and what isn't considered a potato lol. But I believe you lol!

I noticed since the last game update, that having too many pinned favorites, gave me your issue. My sweetspot was 14, if I pinned one more, it would give those issues that you described.

Therefore I decided to create a custom in-game menu. Im about 80% done and still need to test it. Might not directly solve your issue, perhaps the amount of favorite pins already does that for you. Will update on Friday or this weekend.

Nevertheless it will avoid needing to pin everything as a favorite (if you even did that). It will just need 1 fav pin to pin the menu.

Other than that i can't give you an explanation as my pc does not experience it with the mod itself. (Can't troubleshoot something that I can't measure.)

And I would find it very unlikely that my mod is causing it, as the code itself doesn't do much unless you pick a decision (it applies the logic and after that, it doesnt do anything anymore). Same goes for the traits. Just a single action. As an example, Carnalitas does way more on the background in idle than mine. My mod doesn't handle births or random creations, doesn't check if someone turns 18 etc.

Just in case, you checked the loading order right? As if my mod loads before Carnalitas, it might conflict.

Ive not currently got any favourite pins, and load order is fine as far as i can tell, no issues with it and i placed the mod in the recommended location. However I messed around with mod, I removed the section that adds fetishes so it no longer appears when i right click and the CPU usage spike no longer occurs.

The rest of the mod works fine, apply all male/female, that's smooth, no issues. Its ONLY when i right click and the context menu appears. But like i said removing the fetish section has stopped the issue from happening.

And for context, I run CP2077 on ultra, RT on, and maintain a good 60 fps at 1080p no issues. This is the only time CKIII has hiked my usage up. Its not maxing it, 50-60% usage, its just way above what Ive ever had on CKIII. Other than that one issue I’m having though , the mods great, and i look forward to the update.

That's very useful feedback to know, thank you! And thank you for the kind words :).
I did re-check myself (was testing anyway), and indeed I saw spikes on my CPU usage, however it did not directly impact my game experience.
I saw my CPU spike from 8% usage to 21% max. So that's why I probably did not notice it.

I'll look into it, to see if I can find something.

Did you check your error log?
Might be some clues there, I'm now too invested in the new menu, which does goes me challenges on it's own atm lol, to look into the Fetish code again.
The menu might fix it (given it approaches it differently), might not solve it in the end.

No worries, and i cant see any difference in the error logs when i have the mod on or off, nothing that stands out when the cpu spikes, but then again Im not use to looking through CKIII logs so i might have missed something. The game still runs fine with it, its just drops the FPS a bit and its out of the ordinary for the cpu to spike that much. Thats why I mentioned about CP2077, so you’d understand that CKIII shouldn't really cause that on my system. I reckon the separate menu should fix it, because if the fetish selection is separate from the context menu, then it has no need to run the code until the separate menu is triggered.

But i have narrowed it just to the fetish block in the interaction file, remove that and its all good then.
