Order of the Sacred Magdalene

Order of the Sacred Magdalene is an adult society expansion for Carnal Realms, the adult total conversion for Crusader Kings II. It introduces a Catholic religious order devoted to Mary Magdalene, sacred prostitution, carnal charity, religious study, and the celebration of lust as a virtue. The Order is designed as a complete religious institution with its own hierarchy, vows, ministries, Grace economy, missions, artifacts, buildings, ceremonies, manuscript searches, festivals, and political objectives.

The Order is fully integrated with the religious, sexual, economic, and dynastic systems of Carnal Realms. Sacred prostitution uses the total conversion’s prostitution career and client systems. Religious teachings operate within the sexual morality established by Carnal Realms, while its event interface and larger fonts provide the space needed for the Order’s narrative events. Christianity Mod and Even Bigger Text Boxes are no longer required.

Requirements

Carnal Realms is required. The Order uses its religious framework, traits, scripted effects, prostitution systems, pregnancy mechanics, artifacts, event interface, and other shared features. It is not designed to function independently or with vanilla CK2.

Crusader Kings II: Monks & Mystics is required because the Order uses the society system. Players must also meet the general DLC requirements of Carnal Realms.

Joining the Order

The Order of the Sacred Magdalene is a Catholic society for adult women. Membership represents a religious vocation rather than a convenient source of modifiers. A woman who enters the Order may spend decades progressing through its hierarchy, developing her ministry, serving others, and assuming greater institutional responsibilities.

The society has four ranks. A Penitent of Magdalene has taken the Order’s foundational vows and entered a life of sacred service. A Carnal Confessor is an experienced sister who may conduct Carnal Confession, study scripture, teach carnal charity, and perform additional ministries. A Sacred Minister is a senior sister entrusted with healing, teaching, institutional service, and greater religious responsibilities. The highest rank is Courtesan of Jesus, whose members conduct the Order’s most important public rites and exercise its greatest religious and political authority.

Advancement is deliberately slow. A sister must spend five years at each rank, so reaching the highest rank normally requires at least fifteen years of service. Chastity prevents advancement because the Order does not merely tolerate lust. It teaches that sexual desire may be directed toward mercy, charity, ministry, and religious devotion.

Grace

The Order uses its own society currency called Grace. Grace represents a sister’s service, reputation, spiritual contribution, and standing within the institution. It is earned through characteristics and activities valued by Magdalene theology.

Lustful and Nymphomaniac women gain Grace more quickly, but sexual appetite alone does not define an exemplary sister. Kindness, charity, zeal, learning, theological education, sacred service, and participation in the Order’s ministries also contribute to her standing. Grace therefore measures her participation in the complete vocation rather than rewarding sexual activity in isolation.

Grace is intended to be spent. Manuscript searches, Magdalene festivals, institutional projects, and realm-changing reforms consume part of a sister’s accumulated Grace. Gold and Grace serve different purposes within the society. Gold purchases material objects and services, while Grace mobilizes the religious authority and resources of the Order.

Sacred Prostitution

Sacred prostitution is one of the central vocations of the Order. A sister may take a lifelong vow dedicating her sexuality to sacred service and continue developing through the prostitution career provided by Carnal Realms. Her work creates an actual professional and religious history rather than a sequence of unrelated encounters.

The prostitution system selects real clients, transfers payment, permits pregnancy, records professional experience, and allows the woman to advance through career ranks. The Order adds its own theology, missions, rites, and institutional purposes to that foundation. Sexual service becomes an act performed within a religious vocation while remaining connected to the economic, reproductive, social, and dynastic consequences of the wider game.

A sister’s agency remains central to these encounters. When a player-controlled sister decides how an encounter should conclude, that decision belongs to her. The system does not reduce her vocation to a generic event controlled entirely by the client.

Houses of Mercy

The Houses of Mercy are the institutional expression of sacred prostitution. These establishments provide locations where Magdalene Sisters may serve Catholic clients, earn money, complete society missions, offer charity, and participate in events based upon the Order’s theology.

The system is location-aware. A sister must actually be present at a House of Mercy before she can work there. The buildings therefore give the Order a physical presence in the world rather than treating its ministries as events that occur nowhere in particular.

A House of Mercy is not merely a brothel with a religious name. It is an institution where sexual service, charity, hospitality, confession, economic activity, and Magdalene teaching come together. Its meaning is determined by the Order and the religious world of Carnal Realms.

Carnal Confession and Ministry

Carnal Confession is one of the Order’s distinctive rites. It places sexual service within religious ministry rather than treating it as a random seduction reward. Experienced sisters may use the rite as part of confession, mercy, guidance, and spiritual care.

Additional ministries become available as a woman advances through the Order. Junior sisters receive duties appropriate to their rank, while Carnal Confessors, Sacred Ministers, and Courtesans of Jesus gain access to increasingly important forms of service. These include teaching, healing, scripture study, sacred prostitution, institutional work, ceremonies, public rites, and society missions.

Rank progression therefore changes what a sister may actually do. Higher rank represents accumulated experience, trust, service, and authority rather than merely providing a larger statistical modifier.

Sacred Scripture and Manuscripts

The Order contains an extensive sacred-text system based upon study, research, recovery, and preservation. Sisters may study scripture through the society, while separate manuscript searches allow them to investigate theological traditions, charitable writings, ritual texts, records of the Houses of Mercy, and other works associated with Magdalene history.

A manuscript search is not an artifact purchase. The sister follows evidence through monasteries, archives, forgotten religious houses, private libraries, inherited collections, and other possible locations. Success depends upon research and discovery rather than finding a priceless sacred text sitting in a merchant’s inventory.

Recovered manuscripts may survive the woman who discovered them. A Magdalene dynasty can therefore assemble a sacred library across several generations, creating an institutional history that extends beyond any single character’s lifetime.

Sacred Regalia

The Order includes wearable ceremonial artifacts associated with Magdalene rank and ministry. Its regalia includes crowns, veils, jewelry, harnesses, ceremonial implements, cuffs, chokers, and other pieces used in religious office and ritual.

Regalia is commissioned with gold because it represents physical craftsmanship and material wealth. Higher-ranked sisters gain access to more elaborate pieces, while improved regalia replaces lesser examples when commissioned. The system reflects a character’s progress through the Order while remaining separate from the Grace economy.

Black, red, and gold regalia, transparent veils, roses, sacred books, candles, Catholic architecture, and images of Mary Magdalene establish the Order’s visual identity. Its material culture is intended to make the society immediately recognizable in its artwork, artifacts, clothing, ceremonies, and event presentation.

Festivals and Public Life

The Order is not confined to private encounters. Magdalene Sisters participate in feast days, summer fairs, processions, scripture study, pilgrim service, public ceremonies, charitable ministries, and other communal activities. These events present the Order as a functioning religious institution with a public life of its own.

A sister’s responsibilities become more public as she advances. The Public Altar Rite, for example, belongs to the highest rank and cannot be performed by a newly initiated member. Progression moves the character from personal vocation and local service toward public ministry and institutional authority.

Realm and Dynasty

The Order can eventually affect the political and dynastic structure of a realm. A sufficiently powerful senior Magdalene ruler may spend accumulated Grace to establish Enatic Primogeniture, placing female dynastic continuity at the center of her realm. The reform affects her major titles and compatible feudal and tribal vassals.

A separate retirement system allows a Magdalene ruler to surrender temporal authority voluntarily to her heir. She may then continue her religious life after rulership instead of remaining on the throne until death. These systems allow service within the Order to shape succession, government, dynasty, and the long-term history of the realm.

Purpose of the Expansion

The Order of the Sacred Magdalene is intended to function as an actual religious society rather than a sex-event vending machine. Carnal Realms provides the world in which sexuality, religion, pregnancy, prostitution, family, politics, and economics already interact. The Order takes those shared systems and develops them into a formal Catholic vocation centered upon Mary Magdalene.

Within the Order, lust becomes virtue, sexual service becomes mercy, prostitution becomes vocation, and confession becomes carnal ministry. Scripture and recovered manuscripts preserve its theology. Regalia gives it a material culture, Houses of Mercy give it a physical presence, and Grace measures service to the institution. Its ceremonies, festivals, ministries, missions, and political reforms allow a woman to spend much of her life building a religious legacy that may continue through her dynasty.

Required: Carnal Realms
Required DLC: Monks & Mystics

I felt that CK2 still has plenty of life to it. It's also superior to CK3 in many ways. I'll eventually be replacing the Benedictines and Dominicans to be equally as in depth as the Magdalenians.

I fixed a bug in Serve in the House of Mercy decision. Instead of it routing to the sister it would route to the man involved. Once there you were presented with his options.

Great!!!

But, Christianity Mod was abandoned years ago wasn't it...??!

Is it save-game compatible or it is going to break things?

And, as a request,

is it possible for you, to make it compatible with Dark World: Reborn Mod and H.I.P.?

Thank you!

I'm using the last release for Christianity Mod. I have no idea if it is save game compatible.

It should play nice with DWR and HIP if Christianity Mod works for it. This is just a new society. I am reworking vanilla Benedictines and Dominicans. Benedictines will be male only and based entirely upon Levirate fertility. Dominicans would be dommy mommies and dommy daddies.

EDIT: Due to the nature of the overhauls in DWR and HIP that it wouldn't compatible with Christianity Mod. It would be a royal pain in the butt to get them to play nice. The option is to make a submod of the DWR races and societies. I wouldn't want to just use what was done, but use the ideas to make a unique version that works with what I'm already doing.

Due to the problems with the conversation style of event chain for Serve the House of Mercy, I'm going back to the standard event chain. It would work fine for the first few months then the engine would throw the sister the client's event choices breaking it.

The original event was use the decision in the intrigue tab then a random Catholic male would be selected. The sister chooses what ending she wanted from not allowing him to finish, finish inside, and finish outside. It would then send the event to the player/AI to choose if they would adhere to the sister's wishes. If the client ignored that sister's wishes he was punished for it. After about 6 months the event would just break and you couldn't select the decision any longer. You would get the event popup for the man every 30 days.

The new version is just a straight forward event triggered by the decision. The sister still chooses the ending but now it's randomized on if the AI client will follow it. He still gets punished for failing to obey her.

The player male visitation will have the sister's choice randomized and he can choose to obey it or not.

It is quite funny for when someone disobeys with the punishments.

I redid the entire Serve in the House of Mercy event chain. It is no longer the conversation event style. It is just a pure chain from the sister's point of view. The player visit is also a separate chain for male characters. The options are still given for both. However, the punishments have gotten a bit more severe.

Part of the rework was the figuring of the AI obeying the sister's order was altered a bit. Also, I added in a group sex version. Unlike other brothel mods, the pay is pretty good. It scales according to title rank.

Since @Drax70 asked about DWR and HIP, I decided that I would create my own core for all the submods to use. It will be called Carnal Realms. The baseline is that all religions share the Christianity Mod's assumption on sex and lust. The base would be the all the religions changed to fit the new world. From DWR, I'll create the races, redo the body traits, specialized buildings for wizards, shops, and the grand inn. The grand inn is where you send your sons out into the world on quests for 5 years. They can die during it. They can be maimed. They can come back successful. They will level up their adventuring trait.

Shops would sell slot items specific to their religion and culture. This way nobody gets the same items if they have different religions/cultures. The Order of the Sacred Magdalene showcases this quite well in that the Order artisans make artifacts for all 9 slots. There are 9 for each rank, so all total there are 36 regalia artifacts.

If anyone has any features they would like to see from DWR or another mod that you feel fits with Carnal Realms just let me know. I'll work with you on it. If it fits it can be put in.

Updates

I fixed the loading screens for Order of the Sacred Magdalene, so they can fully be seen during loading. I also put in the exclusion for vanilla loading screens.

Order of the Sacred Magdalene

I added in special government types for tribal and feudal. They are vanilla with the addition of the ruler holding temples. You'll never get any penalties for it. In order to go from tribal to feudal requires to use a specially created version of going feudal.

I reworked Serving in the House of Mercy. I standardized the prices for inside and outside finishing. The decision will now scope to characters based on the highest title a sister has. If she is a countess her pool of clients is low born, baron, and up. Duchess excludes low born but receives landed and unlanded dynastic men with wealth, Queen and empress no longer receive low born with a minimum being a count. The decision checks to see if the client has the money to afford to spend the evening with the sister. If no one can afford her then she gets a notification saying that no client could afford her and visit her.

Clients will lose money now so they will have no longer be showing up if they don't have it. Due to the prices and how they scale by the sister's traits and titles, she will earn more compared to older brothels in other mods.

The punishments for failing to obey the sister are severe and working properly. I've seen two counts and a duke get imprisoned and excommunicated for failing to follow the wishes of the sister.

In the future I will be expanding the event out using random rolls that allow for branching results for the event. It's already working for several events. It's possible to do four to ten sections at every step of the chain. If the event chain is 5 steps from beginning to end the possibility is a total of 50 events in the pool. This fixed the entire monotony of CK2 firing the same events with zero variation.

Update

I fixed the succession problems with the Magdalene government. It required a special decision as the vanilla Adopt Feudalism is hard coded.

I expanded the Serve in the House of Mercy to include females in the pool. It branches from the moment the pool is drawn from the people in range.

I updated the event pictures from the older style to the ones used in the loading screens.

I tried to get the custom government to work with the vanilla Catholic systems. It did until you went feudal then you couldn't have a coronation. I'm stripping out the custom government for the next release.

Posted

When the Pope comes to visit the House of Mercy in a group and the group fails to obey the wishes of the Sister. Yes, he is excommunicated and in prison.

Update

  • I added a second bloodline that you earn for doing activities.
  • I expanded out the Order missions with some being dependent upon certain things happening in your demesne. The missions now use a random roll structure to vary the events you see.
  • Once your character reaches Rank 4 in the Order you can take the Magdalene Succession option. It is a decision that upon your heir taking over they can re-enact the succession law at no opinion penalty and for free. It should affect every title in your realm.\
  • Added a lot of new event pictures to make them unified in theme and looks.

I really don't see what else I can do with the mod so I'll state it being complete for now. If anyone has suggestions for additional content feel free to let me know. I'll be moving to working on Carnal Realms. That will be the core for future mods and the Order is already converted to it. Stay tuned for information on that mod.

Gonna give it a shot, looks interesting.

Pre actually playing it, I would like some interactions with other mods I sometimes use. Easy one is a bit of special content for angels and demons from Luxuria Fantasia, at least getting a grace income bonus for angels and possibly demons because they're Abrahamic sex demons, and maybe some special interactions that let demons corrupt sisters towards Lilith by exploiting their lust.

I would also like Tentacled Dreams integration that lets you turn it into a Tentacle-worship society but that's a pretty big ask.

LF and DWR plus other mods are abandoned at this point. My plan is to create a total conversion of the vanilla events to fit the new setting I'm calling Carnal Realms. That will be the core then everything else will be submods for it. Order of the Sacred Magdalene started out as a submod for Christianity Mod. Since that mod is abandoned as well I might as well just create my own core. I am using what was done for the Catholic Church from there. The entire history and other specific bolted on parts will either be removed or rewritten to fit the setting I'm wanting. The history part made Shattered Realms crash when you tried to use it. By not having them and letting the game handle the seeding you can begin to use it again.

I can plan something for angels and demons in the future as a submod. I'm open for ideas.

I do have tentacles in the Order and they're called Kept Mercies. I decided against doing a rehash of Tentacle Dreams. Number one is that the Mythos does not fit within a theistic world. If you read Lovecraft's works there isn't God or other deities in the sense that we know it. There is just the eldritch horrors. That presents a tonal clash. The other problem I had with TD was the entire invasion aspect that pretty removed control from the player to the game as your female ruler is serving a monster. If you like playing the monster then the material is really thin.

The main problem with a lot of mods is that they don't really mesh well with vanilla and leave vanilla events alone. I can expand tentacle content out as long as it fits the setting in the core. As it stands, the core cuts a lot of the religious heresies down and implements lust based versions of the vanilla religions. Pagans are already pre-reformed with full features that put them on par with Christianity and Islam.

I am planning on doing a full overhaul of the societies from vanilla. Benedictines will be all about levirate marriages and sacred male prostitution. Dominicans are dommy mommies and daddies. Lucifer's Own, which is shared for all the other religions, will be reworked with the goal of rank 4 where you can choose to be a specific demon type like lust, greed, etc... Lilith is just a mask that Satan uses.

Carnal Realms is just one of the many settings that I've built through the decades. I love worldbuilding. The Order of the Sacred Magdalene is just a sample of the world I want to create.

But @dewguru has already given his Blessing to continue developing the mod, if you want!!!

The only thing he requests is to give him proper Credit!

You don't need to start from scratch.

If you merge DWR with HIP+EMF, you have the PERFECT immersion\combination!!!

Just saying... :)

There are a lot of things in DWR that I don't like, such as the heroes and villains, fairy-tale characters, Harry Potter material, and other content that doesn't belong in the setting I'm building. Does DWR contain interesting ideas that can be used as inspiration? Sure. In fact, since you originally suggested it, I decided to make a fantasy submod with fantasy races. That doesn't mean I have any intention of importing everything DWR did into a setting where it doesn't fit.

I'm taking inspiration from a variety of mods, including DWR, LF, Christianity Mod, Tentacled Dreams, and others, but inspiration is very different from adopting somebody else's project as my foundation. Taking over DWR means taking over years of accumulated code debt, design decisions, dependencies, and content I would then have to remove or rewrite before I could build what I actually want. That's a very large undertaking just to end up giving people a continuation of DWR instead of Carnal Realms.

That's really the part of your suggestion I don't understand. I've been describing the setting I want to build, the religious changes, the society overhauls, the supernatural system, the fantasy material, and how the Order of the Sacred Magdalene fits into that larger world. Your response to all of that wasn't about those ideas or where they might go. It was essentially that I should continue somebody else's abandoned mod instead.

I'm not trying to make DWR 2.0. I'm trying to make Carnal Realms. If DWR has an idea or mechanic that fits, I can certainly use it for inspiration, and where code can legally and sensibly be reused I'll give the proper credit. But the setting and the core need to serve the project I'm actually creating rather than forcing that project to serve the structure of an older mod.

Ah, if you're doing a total conversion modpack I can see them being hard to integrate. I would note that while they're abandoned and thus you can't expect them to update to support you they still work with the final CK2 version and being dead means you don't have to worry about a change breaking compatibility, but they don't fit arbitrary settings. So I guess I'd just ask for a port of futa mechanics, possibly as a submod, if it's not too much trouble, and maybe a bit of special futa content.

Don't have specific angel and demon ideas beyond that the orders should revere angels and sex with them should be a privilege people are clamouring for, and incubi and succubi should either join or patronize the order with the aim of temping members or clients into sin with their sexuality. Requires a bit of variation and cleverness because traditionally the sin they're tempting people into is just extramarital sex by itself, but I do see the order considers members having sex with non-Christians (and presumably heretics) sinful so incubi/succuni can pose as pagans and tempt them into sleeping with the incubus/succubus as a gateway to pagans or heretics in general.

I can see about futa content and possibly have it in the core. I believe what was done in the past was to use females as the base then a trait for dick size. The engine only understands male and female.

I like the corruption idea and that can be done with traits combined with scripting. I used that exact scripting system to count the number of clients a sister had to generate courtesan ranks after working in a House of Mercy. Angels would remove it while demons would add to it via events. The demons own type determines if it's greed, sex, sloth, etc... that generates the corruption.

I do plan on making angels and demons be playable. There is a lot that can be done with them. When you start from the setting that you've defined you can route things you want to fit within that setting. Carnal Realms is a world where lust is accepted. How it is used is determined to be sinful or not based on the religion.

However, we're far afield for what this thread it about which is the Order of the Sacred Magdalene.

A quick note about modding that people forget is that all of these mods use the same files as the core to overwrite vanilla. In order to get the mods to play nice with each other you have merge the shared files and in many cases blocks you from doing what you want to do. This is why Carnal Realms is the core with clearly rewritten vanilla files that can be hooked into as a submod. That is the cleanest implementation and nobody actually considered it before. This is why you had the competing mods and the required compatibility patches made of spaghetti code and duct tape.

Asking someone that is doing their own total conversion to maintain someone else's mods is a bit disrespectful. You aren't engaging with what the person envisions for their mod and accepting that vision. Notice that I haven't attacked the mod creators of the original mods. That is low hanging fruit and disrespectful to what they have contributed to the community.

Posted (edited)

I'll note that you only have to override a vanilla file if you're changing vanilla behavior rather than adding new stuff, and most non-TC mods avoid this as much as possible, so I actually am playing this mod and LF at the same time as a futa angel and haven't had either break so far, hence initially thinking adding some content was a manageable proposition before realizing it was a total conversion. Main blocker is that changing any event, vanilla or in another mod, requires overwriting the entire file; pretty much everything else you can edit individually. This becomes a massive pain when the original file gets changed in a patch and puts me and most modders off messing with vanilla events and makes inserting something into an event chain impractical.

(Also I only asked because you said you didn't have more ideas for the mod)

Also, minor localization note: the events for getting the sacred regalia seem to assume the character has already done the vow of sacred prostitution and reference piercings that the vow events describe being added. I'm also not particularly clear what, story-wise, the vow adds that the initiation rite didn't already cover; they both focus on how sex is a sacrament reserved to Catholics and I'm not entirely sure what members do between joining and swearing the vow.
