s1amata Posted January 14 Posted January 14 The classics are great of course. Stealth archer, illusion assassin, and big bonk to the face, but they each have their weaknesses. Stealth archer is pretty slow and if you do get seen then a storm mage or a strong archer can take you out quickly. Battles forced to be in close quarters are also hard. For the mages, not everything is susceptible to illusion magic and high level enemies can often turn around and one shot them. Big bonk needs to worry about spells and everyone needs to worry about dragons. Everyone except one. Only one has no weaknesses. It has speed, power, and versatility. The mighty shield. So simple but so diverse and so ridiculously OP. Actually investing perk points in to block trivializes the game even on legendary. Got mages? Spell breaker will plow right through them. Speaking of plowing, got a problem with anything smaller than a dragon? Just shield charge through and ragdoll them around (great for groups). Even frost giants will fall before you. Dragon problem? Spell breaker again and don't forget to use upgraded shield bash to stagger the dragon a lot. If you get bored of Spell breaker, auriel's shield is great and the block tree gives a good bit of magic resistance too. Or you can always enchant your own. Pair it with any 1H weapon or Spell. Windshear is great for ragdolling, mehrunes razor sometimes does instakill, mace of molag bal gives you stamina back, paralyze and ragdoll can cause fall damage, wubajak, etc. All of this gives the shield variety in playstle. 1

But yes, 1H+shield is the easymode in Skyrim, especially when you know where to go and which items to get. It's unfortunate that there's still some fundamental bugs and issues in Skyrim 15 years later that essentially break some fun sounding builds: Dualwielding dagger+sneak+no bow: Favourites menus still can't handle 2 items of the same type and name. Any enchanted weapon+shouts: Shouts almost always refuse to play when holding an enchanted weapon - shout comes out 5 minutes later, after sheathing weapon. Follower+healer: Follower health regen after combat is basically instant. There's hardly any point in playing a healer, besides spamming courage and the occasional candlelight to see what's going on. Staff-only: Staves give no experience when used.

You’re absolutely right: a build centered on Blocking and a shield (especially “Spellbreaker”) turns the Dovahkiin into an unstoppable force. The tactic you described unlocks the true potential of Skyrim’s mechanics, which many people underestimate. While the stealthy archer creeps through the shadows and the illusionist frantically searches for a spell against the dragon, the shield-wielding warrior controls absolutely every aspect of the battlefield.
p1rash Posted August 8 Posted August 8 There's an even bigger benefit OP didn't mention about Block. Quick Reflexes: Time slows down if you are blocking during an enemy's power attack. This perk only requires 30 Block and it's genuinely a game changer for melee combat. Even if you're using 2-handed weapons, this should be one of the first perks you go for. It makes combat more engaging while also greatly improving your survivability, even on Legendary. If an enemy does a power attack, you can immediately bash them to interrupt it. It will stagger the enemy, then once it's out of that staggered animation you can hit them with a power attack of your own to stagger them again. When you get familiar enough with the timing, you're basically able to stun-lock most melee attackers in 1v1 combat. It's really fun!
FauxFurry Posted August 8 Posted August 8 That is what I used to clear the introductory trial of the Lair of Hydra mod. It does not matter how many high level Daedra they threw out, they were all cast aside they pummeled to death while they lay helplessly on the floor.
