Creating Custom shape in 3dsmax

If I want to mod an existing shape using 3ds max what steps do i need to take?

I'm using NifScope and I was looking at someones else s mod, I exported the obj file and edited it in 3dsmax.

Then i wanted to import it into nifscope and have the bones use the same setup as the existing working modded one i had.


Is there is something I'm missing? should I instead be using an existing bone rig?
