[help] frequent 5 sec complete freezes in open environment

Whenever I move around in the open environment, I frequently get freezes for like 5 seconds. Total freeze, not stutter or fps drop.

Wondering what the cause is?

  • Afterwards I'm at 40-60fps stable.
  • It seems to be related to assets loading/some form of calculation.
  • It triggers a refresh of the ENB rendering (similar to when I do alt + tab), but I don't think ENB is the cause because I used ENB in previous saves, and it did not give me freezes, just gradual fps drop.
  • It does not occur in interiors.
  • I do note errors from SLO aroused NG and conditional expressions extended but it would seem odd to me this generates real freezes when loading an area...

Well first of all, you got over 9000 errors about missing scripts and script properties. Even if you fix your freezing issue, there's no point continuing playing until all those are fixed.

 

As for the freezing issue, unless you already know x86-64 assembly, debuggers and disassemblers it's going to be far quicker to rip your setup apart until the problem goes away. Start with things you really shouldn't have enabled in situations like this, like ENB and physics. It makes no sense to have pwetty gwapics and bouncy tits when the game isn't even working properly. Pandora for instance, is very much experimental and WIP. When having issues you should revert back to FNIS behavior files. It's most likely not relevant in this case, but you can probably see which mods should be the first to go when debugging this.

 

My point here is, debugging a freeze is about as difficult as problems get in Skyrim. It's quite unlikely to actually be a traditional freeze (like a thread deadlock) so what you'd most likely be looking for is code that appears to work just fine, just taking way too long to complete.

yes, turns out I started several games over the past months, and I consistently have errors accumulate over time. what i dont' understand is how these accumulate given that I don't add new mods mid playthrough.

And the thing is, if I then deactivate stuff after finding script errors, won't I get MORE script errors?

Finally, most mods work best if installed at the start of the game right? So it sounds to me that while it's not super clean, activating most mods during the alternate start sequence seems like the only way?

Yeah but so many mods require the physics to work? right? because they have animation, so they need the physics.

not ENB I agree. But why would ENB conflict with mods?

I used gdb for C in the past. I guess I can give it a try and use Claude to analyze the log? Which workflow do you recommend?

    1. Just missing scripts in general.
    2. Missing script and property references after refactoring.

Either clean things up with ReSaver, or start a new game. In practice those kinds of errors don't really matter. If the script the game is saying is missing isn't causing some game-breaking problem then keep on playing. The issue in your case is the huge amount of them. The game appears to have a tendency to start crashing on cell changes when you get this high. Not to mention, with over 9000 of these, you have thousands of broken or missing features. It seems unlikely none of those would be breaking something important.

Sure, but your game isn't working in general. Remove variables, make it easier for yourself to figure this out. Don't have physics enabled when it really doesn't have to be. It doesn't matter if your SOS dong turns purple at this point, like I said your game isn't working anyways.

It probably doesn't in this case, but if you ask me, I wouldn't want the extra 30 seconds it adds to the load time every time I need to test the game after removing a mod. In a situation like this, I'd run the game in a tiny 720p window (windowed) and make sure the problem can be replicated here as well - anything to speed up testing. Also, like I said above, remove variables, make this easier for yourself. You don't need lens flare when your game is freezing. If you're lucky, the problem goes away with disabling ENB, and now you know where the problem is. ENB is also exceedingly easy to disable - remove d3d11.dll from the game directory.

Not anymore, the recent versions are decent. As far as I know the only real issue it has is the Havok related crash in the Helgen intro. It is however a mod where if its being used and you're having issues that even slightly point to behavior files (or Havok I guess), Pandora should be the first one out the door. In your case, since we have no information as to why its freezing, I feel like Pandora is again among the first to go.

Use Task Manager to create a memory dump of SkyrimSE.exe when it's frozen, then analyze this dump in windbg. If this is not quick enough to hit the 5 second time window, or alt-tabing risks changing the state of the game despite the freeze, then you'd perhaps have to develop a dll or application that can do the same with a convenient global hotkey. The hotkey could also dump the contexts of all threads, like a crash logger would.

 

Once you have an idea of which thread it might be, you need to get the callstack out of it or otherwise fingerprint it. The offset of the threadproc method might be unique, as an example. Process Explorer can do some of this, like showing the callstack. With the thread fingerprinted such that you can find it in a debugger, you should now have an idea of where to start inserting breakpoints. If its conveniently in a 3rd party module (like an SKSE plugin) you can look into replacing or removing that module, instead of trying to fix it.

 

After bypassing the DRM and debugger traps in Skyrim you can get a debugger in there while it's running, and start trying to identify where the code is getting stuck during the freeze. Be careful not to modify the image itself while doing this, otherwise your offsets may be different. Otherwise do this before finding the thread.

 

Once you know where it's getting stuck, you may need to device a bytecode patch to avoid it getting stuck again, without breaking something else in the process. If you're lucky, you can spot some input data in the stack or the registers around where it freezes - like a texture that you can remove to work around the issue.

 

If there's a code profiling application that works on 3rd party native code, that could be quite handy here. You may even be able to DIY one by configuring x64dbg to not break on breakpoints, but rather just count hits. I'm fairly certain that could be an option. If you see a significant difference in hits per second during the freeze, that breakpoint might be in a relevant part of the code for instance.

 

So, tools you'll probably need:

procexp, windbg, x64dbg, ida7, ghidra, the rest I can't mention here for obvious reasons.

So I do this all the time. unattached instances and unefined elements. the other ones not sure how to find them. I understand there is a link system/you can navigate through the mod with it. but it's a bit unclear what else to delete.

Thanks, that is helpful! so regarding starting new games: do you consider that if it works in alternate start dungeon then we are good to go? Or do we absolutely need to test everything after the alternate start dungeon scenario too to be sure?

Yeah I thought so too. But since i moved to Pandora, some of the older mods animations don't work anymore. TK dodge is an example. Defeat animations don't work anymore either (though it's not game breaking)

They claim it replaces FNIS but apparently it doesn't completely replace it. What is your view on this?

If you see a significant difference in hits per second during the freeze, that breakpoint might be in a relevant part of the code for instance.

 

So, tools you'll probably need:

procexp, windbg, x64dbg, ida7, ghidra, the rest I can't mention here for obvious reasons.

WTR to the crashes, and a bit of investigation.

I got several crashes on the PREVIOUS playthrough with faster hdt SMP being the culprit it would seem (see below)

Now on the current playthrough with the freezes, it got me thinking that perhaps faster hdt smp was the cause of the freezes:

  • it's trying to load SMP when loading new actors and freezes - that makes some sense to me.
  • this would explain why it occurs in open environments only where actors are loaded gradually: for interiors, actors are already preloaded
  • which made me notice my interior loading screens are a bit longer now.
  • anyway if it's not SMP I'm pretty sure now it's actor related anyway (not world asset, FX or whatever)

 

So I'm using SMP with CBPC, which I know you need to be careful about.
The thing is, I found the implementation instructions somewhat confusing and never understood why there is no interface bridge between these two.

  • SMP has a menu that doesnt mention CBPC
  • CBPC doesn't even have a MCM menu...
  • Finally, in the CBBE menu, it's a bit cryptic to me but please confirm if my understanding is correct: the only option is more or less to trigger physics or not on an NPC with the toggle key. The logic being that you already chose which you wanted (CBPC or SMP) when you installed and it's not changeable anymore in game. Correct?

So the only way you can properly configure is when you install the body mode right? and select the options? Is that what intelligent users do? :)

 

Anyway I reinstalled CBBE - see details below. Curious to have your view on the setup.

To me that sounds like you got mods that add the references back. So basically you got quests, spells, packages and such that reference script files that don't exist, and add script properties that the scripts do not have. Fixing these issues is unfortunately a one-at-a-time thing. Use xEdit when fixing these. Not only is it much faster, it also contains a script that will find the objects that reference scripts.

I don't have these elements in my setup because I removed them. I don't use an SMP collision armor like I imagine every else is. I too have a hybrid physics setup though and I'd say its the only reasonable way to do it. My understanding though is that there's a hotkey or a button in an MCM somewhere where you can toggle between which system does what. However one thing to keep in mind with this is that this works as long as you don't equip a hat that has a physics preset that also affects your character's tits, or skirt, or hair, ... This uncertainty is why I always suggest people with physics related issues to just forget about these MCM menus and instead remove either the CBPC or SMP dll.

What I did was rip out the MCM menus and rebuild both SMP and CBPC configs to fit my needs. I have CBPC managing the body, and SMP does the clothing and hair. I made a tool with convenient sliders to generate CBPC config files for me. I can quickly say "I want 10% more stiffness here, and 5% more damping there.". Once I ran out of options with what could be done with the CBPC config file, I started modifying its source code. I now have a completely different gravity system, under water gravity, better collisions, better belly bulge, physics that react to FHU fill levels, fixed Y linear forces while walking/running and fixed various minor bugs to name a few things.

 

And before you ask, the reason why it's not public is:

  1. I promised the author of CBPC to not compete. Sure, this was several years ago so there's been plenty of time for them to overtake my progress in CBPC so maybe this is not so relevant anymore.
  2. My CBPC is different enough to require a total rewrite of the CBPC config files. This makes it fall into the same category as my own build of FHU and some 60 other mods I've made - they would all require their users to drop what they're doing now, abandon the SL ecosystem and start rolling their own things. I feel like requiring this is a bit of a bad mannered move. So that is why I generally share when requested, or share bits to help other people build their own things. Using my stuff puts you in a situation where it's then your problem to make sure everything else works with it.

That crash was caused by SKSE. If I'm not mistaken, those offsets are in functions that deal with saving and/or loading. While theoretically its possible SMP indirectly caused it, it's highly unlikely. The bug, regardless of how much you want to speculate, is in SKSE.

It's the esp's that reference scripts. If the scripts do not exist, you get a Papyrus error.

  1. Start xEdit, don't change the load order.
  2. Right-click a mod -> Apply Script
  3. "Skyrim - List used scripts"
  4. The Messages tab will contain the results.
  5. Cross-reference your Papyrus log with the used scripts.

Script properties are listed under each script field. Simply remove the ones the Papyrus log says doesn't exist anymore.

  3. You have another unhandled exception handler (like from another crash logger, or perhaps some external application) which took precedence, and didn't pass the exception forwards to other handlers.

I know of no other singular thing that covers all these, except for a debugger like mentioned in my quote above.

so I think I found the cause, and the fix.

Informing people so this doesn't get lost somewhere.

 

This one is the likely cuplrit:

I disabled it via MCM and no more stuttering at all. I have very good performance actually now.

This one is causing CTDs for sure in many places. and potentially slowing down in open areas, in particular when mods add exterior meshes (at least that's where I noticed it's lagging). The reason I'm connecting both situations is because it does CTD a lot in locations added by mods.

It's an amazing mod but unfortunately not flawless.

The fix is just to hide the minimap most of the time unless you are in a vanilla exterior. Some modded interiors are fine, but many will crash the moment you (accidentally) hit the display minimap key (L)
