NPC glitch?

So I've restarted a Skyrim play through and for some reason right after I completed the companions quest line Eorlund Gray-Mane is apparently dead I didn't kill him or anything how did he even die he's in the city I restarted it and the same thing happened again what is happening is this a glitch or cuz talking to him after the quest line the game allows you to craft ancient Nord stuff so I can't make it
