joshtree43 Posted April 11, 2025 Posted April 11, 2025 Is there anyone who is knowledgeable on converting a wig into a hairstyle? I tried following a video guide on using creationkit, but i ended up with a character with no hair instead. I couldn't figure out what the issue was and I would like to ask for help from someone who understands modding and could give me a hand. The result I ended up with was a character that was bald and had some weird black texture on their arms/shoulders. If there is any other information that is needed from me I can try to answer to the best of my capabilities.
Kastagir Posted April 11, 2025 Posted April 11, 2025 You'll need to provide more information. 1. provide a link to the guide you used to verify whether it's accurate. 2. list the steps you followed with screenshots of the different dialogs in the CK that you edited. That includes HeadPart and TextureSet edits. 3. list of any changes you made to the .nif files for the hairs in question. 4. screenshot of the result you described. I'm not sure what help you expect by providing so little information. Perhaps you're hoping someone will just offer to do it for you? Perhaps someone will, but I find it more helpful to teach people who to do this stuff themselves.

Sorry I don't expect anyone to do it for me, but I genuinely have no idea what I'm doing or what is wrong with what I've done. For the step by step on what I did since I did not have the foresight to take any screenshots prior (thats my bad) I went on CreationKit and tried editing the hair from https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/69055 by first setting it as the active plugin then changing the path of the model on the hair to the one for the wig nif. I couldn't find a hairline for the wig so I linked the wig nif to the hairline model path as well. As for the result I really apologize but I do not have a photo of it either since I had deleted the mod to get a clean version of it without my edits. The wig mod is no longer on Nexus or other sites and I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post it here, but if its fine I will upload the link for it as well. For the video guide I watched it was a bit of an old video, but I was told that it should be fine for the basics. If necessary I can try to recreate the steps I took and take screenshots of what I did on each part. Im genuinely very lost on every part of what I did. I thought I followed the video relatively well, but there were so many things that were different so I somewhat just made educated guesses on parts I was confused on. If i were to attach screenshots would it be better to upload them directly here, or would it be better for me to upload them somewhere else? Also once again I'm really sorry I can not be more useful.
Kastagir Posted April 11, 2025 Posted April 11, 2025 First thing I'd point out is that video is for making standalone followers, not turning wigs into a hairstyle that can be selected by your character via Racemenu. You'll notice at timestamp 20:51 (use the timeline shortcuts in the video comments) that she's not checking the "Playable" box. That's because the HeadPart records she's creating for the hair and hairline are only meant to be equipped by the follower. The "Playable" box must be checked for the hair to show up in Racemenu as a selectable hair and be visible in game. It must also have the "Playable Races" set to HeadPartsAllRacesMinusBeast to be valid for non-beast default races. If you're using a custom race mod, this won't work and you'll have to enable it for your race which is a whole other thing. As for the black textures on your bald character, I don't have an explanation which is why I asked for a screenshot. You obviously broke something and reverting to a version of the mod before your edits was the appropriate action since it allows you to try again. I can't provide further help unless you identify the wig you're trying to convert to a hairstyle. You don't need to provide a link. Just identify the mod by name and the wig (how it's named in the mod) you're trying to convert. Finally, I'd ask why you're doing this. Wigs work just fine and with fewer problems than Racemenu hairs. I'm not seeing a valid reason for all this effort.

I will try seeing if I can redo the steps but try marking the playable race button. The mod itself is just a single wig by [Cloud] called [Cloud] Aerith Hair. As for why I am trying to convert into a hairstyle is that as a wig it seems to conflict with other armors or accessories and not allow me to wear them at the same time. I did consider changing the wig armor slot, but since I am using modded armors and outfits it seems that most if not all armor slots are already being used by either armors or accessories. I did consider using a different mod called armo 2 hdpt I believe, but no matter where I looked there did not seem to be a guide for less tech savvy individuals and everyone seemed to be completely accustomed to using all these different programs. I asked on another post and they recommended that I tried just converting.
Kastagir Posted April 11, 2025 Posted April 11, 2025 Change the wig hair slots to 31 (Hair) or 41 (Long Hair) in both the .nif and the Armor and ArmorAddOn records. No armor/clothing/outfit mod should be using these slots unless they incorporate headgear with hair, in which case you want to use their mesh to avoid clipping. If you don't want to use their mesh, don't equip their headgear.
