TheRightDoorIsNotTheLeft Posted March 15, 2025 Posted March 15, 2025 Anyone else having insta-crashes when approaching Fort Frostmoth?  I'm using the latest version of AE and experienced this for the first time. I tried no mods, with mods, cleaning the Bethesda files, not cleaning the files. I've spent the last few days and I keep getting insta-crashes.  In case it's helpful, here's my pastebin: https://pastebin.com/MLaX5EuJ  The thing that jumps out at me from the start is  Quote Unhandled exception "EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION" at 0x7FF65D97DEB6 SkyrimSE.exe+150DEB6  When I search for that, all I see are archived Reddit posts where nobody really has an answer. I'm hoping someone here might know what's going on. Â
traison Posted March 15, 2025 Posted March 15, 2025 Your answer is most likely in RSP+F0 and RSP+108. If you want more, switch to a competent crash logger.
TheRightDoorIsNotTheLeft Posted March 15, 2025 Author Posted March 15, 2025 Thanks, I thought Crash Logger required .NET Framework. I stand corrected. Trying a new game to see if I can get better info.
TheRightDoorIsNotTheLeft Posted March 15, 2025 Author Posted March 15, 2025 (edited) Here's a new pastebin, using Crashlogger for AE.  https://pastebin.com/CRPHAKk5  I knew already that it crashed when Falx Carius talks, but I don't understand how to interpret it.  Update: I checked xEdit for conflicts with Falx Carius. Nothing came up for the actor.  "BSLightingShader" comes up quite a bit, but all the links I'm finding for that term come back to LE. Edited March 15, 2025 by TheRightDoorIsNotTheLeft
traison Posted March 15, 2025 Posted March 15, 2025 (edited) See the link in my previous post for the workaround. Edited March 15, 2025 by traison

I do have a mod that adds heartstone necklace. I removed those three files and started a new game from the alternate start room. Did the start in Raven Rock choice, started the quest again, and still insta-crashed when Falx talked.  So I deleted the same vanilla files, and all worked. I think the problem was in the vanilla files themselves.Â

1 hour ago, TheRightDoorIsNotTheLeft said: So I deleted the same vanilla files, and all worked.  Nice to see you sorted it out, but this statement seems quite unlikely. If you truly deleted the vanilla files, it means: You extracted the vanilla BSA archive, deleted the necklace file, and repacked the BSA. The necklace is now replaced with a large red exclamation mark when viewed in-game. Surely not?
TheRightDoorIsNotTheLeft Posted March 15, 2025 Author Posted March 15, 2025 I deleted it in the Skyrim folder. Didn't extract any BSA. And frankly, I don't care if I see an exclamation mark on Falk. It's not like I'll be interacting with him for long. I just don't want my game to instacrash.

If you're using vortex, the file will most likely return next time you deploy mods. If you're using MO2, then that was the result of an unmanaged mod install.
TheRightDoorIsNotTheLeft Posted March 16, 2025 Author Posted March 16, 2025 (edited) I don't know. I may be totally off base here, but based on the other Reddit posts of people saying it's the result of the latest AE, it's a bit more than the result of my mods. And like I said, I tried this totally vanilla without any mods. I didn't say before that I totally deleted my entire Skyrim game and folder and reinstalled the game from scratch. Totally vanilla, same result. Next time I start a totally new game, I'll try going into the BSA and delete the items from there. But for now it didn't crash my game when I tested it. Since I'm not taking Falx as a follower I don't care what side effects happen, so long as it doesn't crash the game like it has for the last few days I kept trying again and again. Unfortunately there's no stray nif files in the Steam files. Reddit posters are unfortunately wrong in this case.  8 hours ago, TheRightDoorIsNotTheLeft said: Next time I start a totally new game, I'll try going into the BSA and delete the items from there  If we assume the mesh is broken in the vanilla AE files, it would be far wiser to grab the mesh from a SE install and use it instead of stabbing the vanilla BSA archives. Find someone with SE, plenty of those around still (like me), and request the file from them.

TheRightDoorIsNotTheLeft Posted March 19, 2025 Author Posted March 19, 2025 So after using the files you sent me and replacing those, I had no CTD. Considering that I had reinstalled Skyrim AE before that and verified files in Steam, something in that download broke my game. Your files fixed it.
