I'm having ZERO luck finding another crash anywhere like this to at least go off of anything. The only mod I'm currently running that modifies guards specifically is a mod changing guards from male to female. User reported disabling this let them get closer to whiterun gates before the crash. traison Posted February 6, 2025 Posted February 6, 2025 It crashed because it tried to dereference RSI which at the time of the crash was 0x0 - a null pointer. It occured in RaceMenu while it was trying to apply a skin overlay (most likely in one of the body slots) on a BSTriShape named "3BA". This mesh belonged to reference id 0xFF0016C4 form id 0x0001B5F0 "Whiterun Guard" last modified by "JK's Whiterun's Outskirts.esp" in form id 0x00009659 "PelagiaFarmExterior" last modified by "hearthfireextended.esp". So, things I'd start with: Analyze the NPC in question, see what body overlays apply to them and where they're coming from. Reduce or remove them. Make sure the body overlay textures being applied are sane, as in, no non-standard dds sizes or encodings. If possible, look for an alternative version of RM. Newer older doesn't matter as long as its compatible with the game version. Consider whether the various fixes for RM would be relevant to this issue. memleak fix for instance, does it fix something other than the leak with hair selection? Some of these things could obviously be tricky to do remotely on someone elses' computer. It may be worth the time to find a locally reproducible crash identical to this one. For instance, can you get your own game to crash by doing this: Start in Riverwood. prid ff0016c4 placeatme 1b5f0 100 Approach Whiterun. If that doesn't get you anywhere then I need to know exactly which version of skee is being used, so that I can disassemble the dll to potentially learn more about what its doing. 1

Also had a user that was getting a very consistent crash send me a save while his character was freshly in Riverwood - hadn't been to Whiterun yet but was getting a very consistent crash getting there. Same console result on his save. As far as the skee version, using current racemenu for AE - specifically 0.4.19.16 which is supposed to have the memory leak patched out as of 0.4.19. Would it be worth attempting installing the fix anyway? Also - naturally Nexus is down at the moment. Edit - and right as I submit, it's back live. Truly a Nexusmods moment. I assume you mean ff0016c4 does not exist. If so, coc your way to WhiterunStables for instance and pick a random object or guard outside the gate and use that reference id instead. The idea is just to have some reference to place the NPCs on so that they're in the problematic area when you approach. If its a resource issue, I imagine 100 NPCs (presumably all with the overlay(s)) more would reveal it. I would restart the game after getting the reference id, as visiting the area once, then returning to Riverwood to do the test could invalidate the entire thing - cache probably being a thing and all that. Presumably one with the same overlay(s). I would still approach this from the overlay direction. Surely you can't have that many alternatives for mods that add overlays to guards. I mean, are they all walking around with full-body warpaint or what? If it really can't be determined from the mods in your collection, then I'd write a script to list overlays on the NPC from the crash log. That'll reveal the file name of the dds, and your mod manager can tell you where it came from. Edit: Unless SKSETaskInstallOverlay means the overlay hasn't been added yet, and is only about to be added. In that case you could search through all pex files in all mods (including BSA files) for "AddOverrideString". Notepad++ can do that search. Actually no, the only real overlays I have installed is Pubes Forever SSE, PubesForever for Males, OPubes Addon and OPubes NG. So.. the crash walking into Dragonbridge from Frostfall is repeatable which is great. I ended up disabling all 4 pube overlays. Walking into Dragonbridge my frames absolutely tanked for a few seconds, but I was able to walk into the city. Looks like one of those is the culprit. EDIT And now suddenly with everything enabled taking the exact same path, no crashes. Yeah found your post talking about the string search. Would you mind sending that over when you have a moment? Brain started working, spawned 100 guards on me - game naturally tanked framerate but was able to get them spawned in just fine - no issues. Did this 3x with the multiple guard IDs referenced ITT. The AddOverrideString string is not visible in it, despite it containing the nioverride.pex file which has it. Regardless though, those results would then suggest one of 2 things: The mods adding the overlays are using something other than AddOverrideString. The mods adding the overlays have BSA archives similar to RaceMenu's, and the string is not visible in them. But, it looks to me like you already know which mods are adding the overlays - you tested removing them and it removed the problem. No point searching for these anymore I don't think? Couple of options then: Less pubes. If we assume its a resource issue, or limitation in RM, adjust the mods you already know of to not apply overlays to everyone. Inspect the overlays, make sure there's nothing silly about them like non-standard sizes or encodings. Get a debugger into SkyrimSE, reverse engineer the problem area and figure out exactly why its crashing.
