There's been a while since I downloaded The Sims 4, and I wanted to know if it's necessary to use a mod to connect with friends and actually play with them? At first, I thought it was part of the app itself, but I feel like I have no idea where to start

You cannot play with others without the multiplayer mod, which you can find here: https://sims-multiplayer.com/

I've never used it, but it appears quite popular.
