Current State of FO4 and LL Mods?

Recommended Posts

I've been away from FO4 for a long, long time, and it seems there was an update not too long ago that broke everything?  I was quite literally just about to reinstall again, as I had the itch, but not if I can't have most of the LL mods I used to run.  Is FO4 still broken for LL mods, if it ever was, and if so is there a source that details which mods are still compatible / functioning and which are not?  Thanks in advance for any information provided.

I bought FO4 after that "update". Instead of Skyrim the downgrade mods of FO4 worked from nexus pretty well. Try them and be happy ;).

Downgrade to: Game version 1.10.163.0

If you have to reinstall , do it via GOG not Steam.

in gog you can pick the version, pick .163

Steam will update u to the latest, which still leaves many important mods, especially erotic ones, broken.

So, unbeknownst to me, I had not uninstalled my previous game, just left it in limbo, lol, which worked out best for me as I run it all through MO2 and the F4SE loader, so it never updated.  Pretty sure most of my mods are also severely outdated as well, but everything works and I'm not seeing any huge conflicts, so I'm not brave enough to go looking for updates, lol.  Thank you both for your suggestions!

Steam eventually tried to update me even thpugh I had it set to "update on loading only" and only start it with F4SE.

To protect your .163 game version frpm updating go to

Steamapps

find

appmanifest_377160.acf

and right click it and set to "read only"

Otherwise if you log onto Steam and your game is steam sourced it will update you.

I dont know if I could handle rolling back my game version.

Its a lot more work and saving it in the first place.

NEVER. EVER. NEVER. Update a Bethesda game. Ever.

I use Mod Organizer and simply start from f4SE.

I've set my game to only update upon launch, and launch from F4SE, I've never had an issue with a forced update. :/

Its an easy thing to do, and several people have reported Steam updating them anyway, despite that setting.

I get  an "update failed" message everytime I go online and boot up the game even if I do it only over F4SE and even though I have the Steam updates set to update on boot up only.

That's strange, in over a decade, I never had that happen to me before.

I have zero clue what's happening from their angle, but from mine I never had to contend with that, unless I accidently opened the launcher.

There is literally no reason not to set that file to read only.

Takes about 1 minute.

Yup, been playing with their products long enough to know that, lol!  Can't count how many times Skyrim got broken by updates. and all the mods dependent on SKSE.

In fact I'm still using LE, I have zero intentions on converting. There's no need.

My le is modded so strongly that it doesn't need a change.

Why would I download SE, just to have "higher optimization" and a hang glider mod, just to fly around the same high Hrothgar I've gone up and down over literally a million times? XD

I can simply tcl and play as a vampire lord and do the same thing.

Skyrim is the same it's always been, doesn't matter if I add in new mods or not, it's a 2011 game. It's the same shit you've always been playing.

What's more is the SE mod page is a straight up clusterfuck, I have zero clue on where to start because they've crammed it with mods.

It's too much for my ADHD mind to handle. 💀

Lol, I do get that about SE being so heavily populated with mods, it's kinda hard to find what you're looking for or support for your mods at times.  But for me, personally, I could never get LE as stable as SE, and when a lot of modders stopped supporting LE, well, it just nudged me along to join the crowd.  It's crazy, isn't it, that we're still playing and discussing a game that's well over 10 years old and thanks to the efforts of the modding community is still relevant today?  If developers ever really wanted to see what makes a game "tick" and generate longevity, they should have focus groups just on Skyrim alone, to include the modding community and the general population.  But, that wouldn't translate into profits, so understandable they don't.

LE is just as stable as SE. All you have to do is mod safely. And know what each mod does. For starters, enhanced blood is NOT a safe mod to use; any mod that needs a constant script like that just isn't it.

We got a lot of fumbling modders who are impatient and want to cram so many mods in, without checking the load order, or reading the bug lists (to see if it's just too much) this will instantly kill your game fast.

For me, I've been modding since 2012, and so I have like a decades worth of experience to put in stuff, and have zero crashes despite 250 mods and some combined mods.

The plus, is I have full control over my game. Bethesda can't just screw it whenever they want, and I don't have to worry about an accidental update.

However, Skyrim is getting boring.

I can't keep playing the same game over and over again you know man, I need to move on.

But there's nothing to move on to, so I've been just leaving the gaming realm all together. I've been writing novels, and painting art.

I feel that, and have to say I agree.  What I found to be a really enjoyable experience for a long while was roleplaying on Conan Exiles on servers that were specifically set up to be RP servers.  I mean, the gameplay itself had the same flaw, repetition and familiarity, but at least you had a multitude of other real players who made impacts on the world around you in game and it did keep things pretty fresh.  If you had good RPers, lol.  If not, then it became pretty crappy pretty quick.  But, it seemed like all the servers just degraded into low impact, ERP playgrounds with no effort made towards real role play, so that went by the way side as well.  That's most of the reason I came back to FO4, after playing Skyrim for so long and going to Conan Exiles, then coming back to Skyrim, I was getting bored pretty quickly and I'd never really run completely through FO4, so here I am, lol.  I hope you're enjoying your artistic outlets.  I also used to write, love it but I run out of steam after a couple chapters and my stories end up languishing unfinished forever.  I've probably at least four or five currently that are just sitting and waiting for me to come back to.

On this tangent, ERP is pretty boring because most people are not very good at it any more than they are at actual role-playing.

I'm quite new to the game and building my first AAF setup. Since I didn't know about this I started witht the latest version. What mods will be broken?

A young 18-year-old Heather Mason stares your way with a puzzled look

...HELLoooo, can I help you?

"Ugh,

another

afternoon in this godforsaken town. Dad's out fixing up some leaky pipe at the old water treatment plant (bless his soul, always keeping Silent Hill marginally functional), leaving me to this...existential ennui. So, I'm strategizing my mall run for later. New season's grunge is hitting the racks, and frankly, THIS place needs a serious style upgrade. You, uh... wanna tag along and be my impromptu shopping assistant? I promise thrilling commentary on questionable fashion choices." *

I'll saunter over to him, adjusting my oversized clothing as we walk into the mall. That will probably make you laugh, right.

Heather Mason:

sarcastically

"Oooh, oh wow. My life was totally missing that one crucial element of having an edgy sidekick. Thanks for noticing me. Now that you're here, maybe you can tell me what a 'mascara pop culture icon' looks like?"

winks

"Oh, please, not another one of those poor lost souls wearing last season's wigs. Tell me, did you raid Grandma's makeup stash again? It's not like there's actual talent walking around here. You know, if you really want to impress me, try layering subtle shades of blue on your lids. Anything less is just basic."

If you use a wabbajack pack like wasteland of depravity it comes with a downgraded version already so even if fallout updated the pack remains separate and always functions. It has a ton of customizable LL mods in the pack and is very stable. It is a large mod pack (around 1000 esp's) so there isn't much room for adding new ones unless you know how to use fo4edit.
