I don't know how anyone is supposed to answer this since they may construct a mod-pack you ultimately won't like. And even if you do, it's just going to break come this Halloween with the release of the new (for once, intriguing) pack. Just look yourself, it's really not that difficult to find what are the staple mods out there. "Best mods 2024" in a search engine would do you good. 

 

There's a lot of subjectivity at play here, so the best collection would be the one you create yourself. 

 

As for checking if a mod works with the latest update, just check when the update came out via the patch notes, then check when the mod was last updated or if there's confirmation from the author that the mod is fine.
