[solved]moving moded game with MO2 to new PC, but when loading save file it says I missing esp files.

I moved my moded game (the whole MO2 folder) from laptop to new PC with exactly same directory, the game launched normal.

I can start new game, but can't load the old save files

it says I missing list of esp files (can't tell how many but seems like I missing every esp).  I didn't uncheck anything in MO2, anyone knows whats going on?  🫠

😅 I heard I only need move MO2 folder, but it seems  something inside the game folder causing this error, after move the whole game folder and over write,  now I can load the old save files. 🍸  Thanks for all the help

Use Wrye Bash to find out which esp files your saves can't find.  Read about portable installation mode in MO2 and configure it correctly.  Make sure it is moving your load order files as well as MO2 files and game files.  Load order is typically stored elsewhere.

In a normal environment (not using MO2's portable installation option) there are four directories that must be moved:

  • game folder (\steam\steamapps\common\skyrim)
  • mod manager files
  • settings and saves (\users\[username]\documents\my games\skyrim) exact path may vary depending on operating system
  • load order (\users\[username]\AppData\local\skyrim) path may vary depending on operating system - this is the path on Windows 10

Load order files are independent of your mod manager - they are edited when you change your mod list in MO2 but they are still needed by the game.  It sounds like you didn't copy them and when you launched Skyrim on the new computer it generated new, blank load order files - and your saves are expecting the old load order.

there's a Saves tab in MO2 where you can see your save data. if you move the mouse over those data you'll what esps are missing. then go to Plugins tab and tick them on.

I just double checked, in MO2 load order file is inside MO2/profiles and it looks same as the one inside my laptop 🫠  Thanks for help

everything looks fine inside MO2, save tab says nothing missing, but after launch the game, try to load these old save files it says esps are missing...

I also tried a new game with AIM looks like I have everything activated correctly in the new game.  it just happened when load old save files. weird 😅  Thanks for help

I don't actually use MO2 so I can't vouch for the accuracy of this function.  As I said already, launch Wrye Bash and see what it says about your saves.  If you have all the plugins but not the same order it will show that.  If a single .esp is missing it will flag it with a color (and every plugin after it).

Generally, when one tool (MO2 in this case) doesn't solve your problem it is worth checking another tool (Wrye Bash).  Also, MO2 uses profiles to store load order - make sure it's actually loading your profile.

🤣 I copy the whole game folder and solved the problem, I don't know what file is missing but it works..
