katharoet7 Posted July 15, 2024 Posted July 15, 2024 Entering CK3 for the first time the thing that immediately bugged me was how dark the characters' textures were. I get CK3 probably tried to be realistic/gritty with this style but it just ends up making the characters look bland, cartoonish, and too similar. In reality the difference in pigmentation between human beings can be literally white and black. (Yes the girl actually has eyes that are purple under bright light and obviously she's an albino, and so is that other man) Meanwhile in CK3 the darkest hair isn't very dark and the lightest (non-albino) hair is dirty blonde. And don't get me started on the skin colour, the lightest non-albino skin colour is a beach tan beige colour and the lightest albino colour is just a regular central european IRL skin tone. The eyes are too undersaturated too but thankfully I found a mod that fixes that and also adds purple eyes.

This is a video game, and that presents limitations. Let me try tackle the light skin color, as that is easier. There are some mods, like https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2222302033 That change skin color to be lighter (its a texture that can be edited, this mod doesnt bring the skin color to white, but its at 90% brigthness, and not much color) Attaching 2 images with this mod taken, and skin color set to as white as possible. The issue is lighting. For white skin color to look white, you need white light, and the game doesn't have much white light. It has a lot of interiors, and with fire as light, or ambient light thats impacted by the material of the surfaces light is reflected off, but basically unless you can actually make lighting to be very bright everywhere, even if you had a perfectly white surface, it would look not white. Dark skin color is a bit harder to explain, but I think there the issue is, that surfaces are too reflective. Due to this, even a perfectly black skin color would have too much white mixed in due to reflections that it ends up looking not perfectly black. Not sure if its possible to create more matt color. So I think there are game limitations to get to pure black and pure white color, but white is probably harder due to games lighting.
