Just came back to FO4 and am having problems.

I recently reinstalled FO4 on my PC and after installing some mods when the game launches I get a black screen that stays indefinitely.  I am using the GOG version which has not been updated to the so called next-gen game.  The mods I am using I have had them for many years and the last time I updated them was December of 2023.  I have tried downloading a collections list instead but it has the same problem.  Black screen when launching game that never goes away.  This only happens with a modded game.  I have run FO4 in it's vanilla unmodded state and it works.  Also why is FO4 so difficult to get working with mods?  I can reinstall Skyrim AE with mods after a 2 year hiatus and get it running with no problems,

This when starting a new game?    Keep pressing enter every few seconds, it'll come up. (There's a prompt coming up that you can't see.)

No it happens before the Bethesda intro as soon as I launch the game the screen goes black.  I do not have the next gen update and all of the mods are the version before the update.  It's weird because I have used these mods before.

Okay narrowed it down to a problem with a file in my F4SE folder.  I disabled all of the mods and tried to run the game and had the same problem as before.  With the mods still disabled I removed the F4SE folder and the game launched with no problem.

 

Here's a screenshot of my F4SE folder does anyone know which file is the culprit?

This might seem obvious, but have you edited your INI files to allow mods to function? You say you have reinstalled FO4, so the INI files will be reset, this might well be the issue.

 

I took this from "the fucking manual" it is essential for modding your game

 

 

Open the following file:

 

If Vortex -> Documents/mygames/Fallout4 -> Fallout4Custom.ini

If MO2 -> MO2's .ini editor -> Fallout4Custom.ini

 

And add these 3 lines:

 

[Archive]
bInvalidateOlderFiles=1
sResourceDataDirsFinal=

 

 

If you've already done this, I apologise, but sometimes, the obvious is easily overlooked.

From your attached pic, you have Address Library bins for many versions of the game, including the newest version of the game (version-1-10-934-0.bin) which is not compatible with many F4SE mods. Just having multiple versions of Address Library installed could be an issue, as well as using mods that have not yet been recompiled for the newest F4SE. I would uninstall all of the Address Library versions and just use the one for the version of F4SE you have to start with. The DLLs for MCM and Buffout are both older and probably don't work with newest version of F4SE. Food for thought.

Yeah, I noticed that when I attached the pic and deleted the other bin files such as the next-gen one since I am on the previous version of FO4, and I still have this problem.  But there is good news after one or two minutes the game starts up fine and everything works as it should.  This is the first time in my history of playing this game that I've had this problem.  But thank you for your suggestion :).

Everytime I come back to this game it's a tangled mess of spaghetti I have to go through again 🤪

Thanks I agree every time I come back I always have trouble getting the game started with mods.  Skyrim is so much easier to install mods and play.
