Gillfruits are a highly diverse family of low-growing flowering plants that grow large, usually edible roots beneath the ground. Their exact origin is unknown, but they have been cultivated in regions of the West, Near South, Mid East, Far East and Far South for many millennia. Species of Gillfruit can be found in both dry and humid climates and they are often able to withstand a wide range of temperatures. The roots tend to be quite dense and rich in calories, and are in many ways an equivalent to the potatoes of our world. Gillfruit flowers tend to be quite fragrant and the stems often possess medicinal properties that are varyingly studied and well known.
