Generally no... I've tried a couple of policemen and you could only follow one at a time.

 

But with some mode (check atLittleMSSams or at Dine Out by Carl)  will allow you to own restaurant or retail/bar... with your familly member as staff.

 

I think you could only recruit adult sims. I've never tried with teens and I doubt it's possible with children because child should go to school not to work and animations cost money).
