I like fallout 4, but sadly the commonwealth seems a bit dead and empty compared to other games in the series. There barely is a society even though its been over 200 years since the bombs and roleplay options are highly limited. Luckly there are mods to help with this but theyre all around nexus making easy to miss something, so |i made this thread to discuss and compile a list of good  mods by theme dedicated to making the wasteland seem more alive and offering more roleplay options. This is not a modlist or mod pack its a thread dedicated to making recommendation and discussion of good mods to make fallout 4 a better fallout game.

I'm eager to see what everyone's able to find by either remembering or currently trawling through existing mods.  Your grievance about the Commonwealth is something I've kept in my head for a while now, too.

In addition to more "towns" and a more uniformly-distributed population, you'd also think some of these people would've worked together to drag all the wrecked and ruined shit out of the streets.  You have to either be kinda ignorant or jump through a whole lotta hoops to accept the myriad piles of nondescript junk littering (and BLOCKING) the city.

Well, now, my feeling is that FO4 seems less dead than 3 and NV (a dead Mojave seems good to me since it's a wide open desert, not an urban center like Boston or Washington, D.C.). But, I agree it is kinda dead. Comments about the state of things 200 years after the bombs are nothing new, right? My saying is "It looks like the bombs fell 2 years ago, not 200 years ago. Everyone lives in a rusty shack, but they have a plasma rifle." Sawyer the bartender in Club Snuggle (which i think is in Outcasts and Remnants, but maybe it's in Depravity) has a good line in response to "This place looks almost pre-war," and it goes something like "I don't understand why people say that. It's been 200 years. Where I come from, we just don't let trash sit around that long."

In addition to Depravity, I have most of Thuggysmuf's other quest mods (e.g., Outcasts and Remnants) installed when I play. Just like Depravity, they add "stuff" to the Commonwealth.

Dont forget Atomic World!

https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/28713

My number one "enrichment" file. If you only add one make it this one.

Does not add new factions but  a lot of small locations, some of random survivors in them m ( non hostile), a couple of which are manned by Minuteman remnants, other by random couples trying to survive others by supermutants or ghouls others are empty.

I tried many other additions of this type but this one is incredibkly conflict free and feels very polished and as if it had been in the game from Day 1

Also tales from the Commonwealth adds some disticnt individuals most of whch are potential settlers many of which have small background stories:

https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/8704

The rooftops , adds small locations "up top" on the roofs ( which makes sense a good place to hide) and usually a way to get to them even w/o a jetpack. (ladders, emergency stairs etc)

https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/73192

South of the Sea - Atoms Storm. a lot of detail. does not conflict with Atomic World. But not suitable for erotic adventures of the type that are the hallmark of this site. More for levelled hero type characters. I only play this one as a guy, as it does not feel right to walk around the glowing sea in a pretty short dress.

https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/63152

The tunnels- Lots of caves to explore. One of them had a significant loot item. all others are mostly exploration and hiding from rad storms. Beautifully done interiors.

https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/67006

Then there are  a lot of good New Lands Mods. but that would be a seperate list.

PS: As for the 200 years inConsistencies, I just play the game imaging it has been 20 years not 200 years. After 200 years not a single tall building would still be standing (if discovery channels Life without people" can be belived)

Thuggysmurf has some really cool mods, my problems with it are one detail that connects fallout 4 and 3 in fusion city and turning the institute into a club. I like the idea of reforming the institute and opening it to business and diplomacy with the commonwealth but thats too far.

Its pretty old not not that optimized but sim settlements 1 with its expansions its great for making the commonwealth more lived in bc of the option to start the game with some settlements already built on multiple levels and they even build more by themselves sometimes, something thats lacking from the sequel. I like sim settlements 2 but the questline doesnt fit some characters and it doesnt come with the option to start with some settlments built partially or at max level. They said theyll eventually add a way to play without the main questline but for now Id say that sim settlements 1 if better if you just want a livelier wasteland or focus on a few settlements instead of rebuilding the whole commonwealth.

No doubt his mods have a silly element to them. But they have good writing and the amateur voice acting is pretty good.

I agree also he does a good job making his characters appear realistic without 50,000 supporting apperance mods.

Where I live the Hillbillies at least throw the trash outside.

But I have wondered since the start of my F4 experience why there isn't a way to assign settlers to clean up their settlements, there are assignable guard stations, gardeners, supply lines and such but here, live in this dump.

And the tires, so many tire for mosquitos to make babies in, hordes of Mosquitos.

This modder has assignable cooks, waitresses, guards have a schedule, and soo many other cool add-ons check them out.

I think the problem with cleaning up the gigantic piles of trash is the precombine issue. Concerning tires and realism, I've seen people point out that there is no way our tires would last 200 years in the elements. So either we say "Fallout tires are made of better stuff" or "The developers didn't think it through or didn't care."

According to Quora- "A regular car tire will take about 65 year to decompose into nothing up to about 80 which is actually on the fast side of other things found in a car like 5 centuries for the engine block to a 1000 years for some of the cushions and never for the glass(maybe 1 million years till its powder but it'll still be glass)"

That seems fairly quick for a tire, steel belts and all.

Yeah I know of Precombines, but Bethesda is the great & Powerful OZ, they could have made it so if they weren't too lazy.

In terms of immersion and theme, in my opinion, out of the box the game should have been made without all the huge piles of debris in places where people who are not junkies, raiders, Super Mutants and such live. I think what they did was make the environment look like not what they think the environment would look like but rather what they thought players should think the environment would look like. I like Fallout 3, NV and 4, but the piles of trash in places where the "normal" people live really hurts immersion.

EDIT: I tell people who've never played "People live in rusty shacks, but they have a well-maintained plasma rifle."

No.

Any NK mods will be unaffected, CW only (and its plenty there trust me.)

Affirmative.  Have been using it since you mentioned it for the first time in a different thread,  it has become a mod I do not want to miss anymore. Thx btw.
