Unseen Problems

Yet again our paths cross. Greetings.

A mystery to you, gentlemen. And ladies.

I have encountered a severe problem with my current installation of Oblivion. I have never seen anything like it and I am baffled. Honestly, I cannot think of any reason why this is happening and I need help.

A few days ago, while I was minding my own business in Cyrodiil, my frame rate suddenly started dropping until reaching minimum in a matter of seconds. Then something extraordinary happened. The game "unloaded" most meshes and textures leaving behind pitch black people with body parts missing and furniture floating in the abyss. The game did not crash but retained the extremely low frame rate.

All menus turned black. Inventory, options, main menu. Even the console was unusable as text was replaced with black bars. I managed to save in an empty slot and quit the game by clicking randomly.

I pondered for a moment and started the game again. Everything was back to normal except the save I made. It said it was corrupted and it could not be loaded. Well, I tried anyway and, to my surprise, it loaded. Nothing was wrong anymore.

Then... It happened again. And again.

I noticed a pattern. Now I can reproduce the bug. If I stay in an interior for about 5 minutes, the bug will appear. It doesn't happen in an exterior. After appearing, I cannot leave the interior or the game will CtD.

I included a couple of screenshots of the moment it happened.

here is my load order.

I have no clue what I should do next. I have never seen Oblivion do something like this and I am kind of fascinated by it... what is the cause of this strange but fatal bug?

Help will be much appreciated.

I've seen this before. It is a memory issue for sure, a technical problem with the game itself and its less-than-optimal memory management.

The cause of the graphical weirdness and subsequent CTDs is the game suddenly becoming unable to display the textures, very probably the normal maps. It's because the video memory buffer is full and the game can't properly flush it. Do you have any memory-hogging texture replacers installed?

What you can try in any case is installing this system here. It's automatically flushing the game's cell buffers and video memory cache at set intervals. Another nifty plugin to have installed is this one here. Both can be used in tandem for best results.

Other than that - depending on your OS - you can also try to patch the game's exe file to be able to use more RAM. If you are using a newer 64-bit OS (and have the necessary RAM to boot) you can try the 4GB patch. I myself still use Windows XP 32-bit so I'm basically screwed. Sideways. That's why I gave the '3GB Enabler' a try and am experiencing fewer memory-related crashes than before.

In case you are going to try one of these two, backup your Oblivion exe before applying the patch!

Lastly if the issue is caused by texture files too large for your system you could go for other good-looking but more optimized texture replacers.

Using the 'QTP3 Redimized' version for example instead of the regular package makes already a huge difference.

Apart from that and probably not responsible for your CTDs, nevertheless worth considering is a change to your load order so the bottom looks like this:

Bashed Patch, 0.esp
LoversMB2.esp
Lovers3dorgasmMB2.esp
LoversIdleAnimsPriority.esp
Lovers3dorgasm.esp
LoversAnimObjectsPriority.esp

I'll add that with OSR, do experiment with the replacement heap options. As the documentations says, Oblivion's is just wretched and unsuitable for a modded setup.  There are four or five choices of replacement and even on a marginal system like mine, the FastMM4 heap (option #1) is a major improvement and seems rock stable.

In short, always ditch the Bethesda heap.

Thank you for your replies.

Unfortunately, the problem persists..

I did everything you suggested but to no avail. Tweaking the OSR settings did not cure the bug. Neither did it cause any significant differences in performance. Streamline did not help either and I am already using the 4GB patch as I use a 64-bit OS.

The only texture replacers I use are "High Rez Skin Textures for HGEC" and "High Resolution Faces for Roberts Male and Female". Nothing else.

I know that NVIDIA users can encounter a black screen bug that happens specifically indoors. Could the cause lie there? I watched a video where the bug was demonstrated and, although not sharing the disappearance of textures and meshes that I have, I noticed a similarity.

During the bug if I turn around, certain directions will make the screen go completely black.

Another noteworthy observation is that pausing the game, either by pressing ESC or bringing up the console, after the frame rate starts dropping but right before the meshes disappear and textures turn black, the bug won't happen until I unpause the game.

This whole thing is very odd considering that I have successfully installed and played Oblivion with the same mods on this current system before without any problems.

Looking forward to your response.

Damn. With these specs you shouldn't run out of memory anytime soon! Yet the game does. Leaves me clueless.

When I started playing the game on PC I encountered the blackscreen bug quite frequently as I also have an nVidia card. A mod that was supposed to fix it didn't help as far as I remember. I think it was the Bash tweak addressing this problem that did it for me, never saw a black screen again in almost two years now. But it indeed is completely different from your issue of only a portion of the textures turning black.

Just for the hell of it you could try deactivating the black screen bug fix mod you are running and see if it makes any difference. You said that you started to suffer from this disappearing textures effect a few days ago? Did you install any new mods recently that might be responsible for astronomically eating up system resources?

When I recommended those changes to your load order I did not realize that you don't seem to have a Bashed Patch? Making one with its blackscreen fix tweak active would also be an option to consider.

We may have just discovered something new. Something that has most likely never happened before. How exciting!

The situation is as follows..

Roughly a month ago I removed my old installation of Oblivion as it was getting "out of hand", so to speak. The root folder was bloated with unnecessary garbage from earlier experiments and I wanted to begin again. A fresh start. Now, I was almost finished putting together my new installation when I encountered this bug. It has pretty much halted my progress and now I am just trying to figure out a solution. I have started to call this bug "The Black Plague".

The cause for this bug cannot be the "Black Screen Fix" as I installed it AFTER the problem had already been detected. Now that I know it doesn't work, I will go ahead and remove it. I just wanted to give it a try. It's peculiar.. I have never needed a fix before although I have almost always used NVIDIA.

I tend to use the same set of mods that have been familiar to me for quite a while now and none of those have ever caused any problems. It could be an update to one of those mods... Talking about resources, I noticed that during the time the bug was active, CPU usage rose to about 50% when it was earlier hovering around 30%. Nothing else noteworthy happened, resource wise.

But there might be light at the end of the tunnel!

During waiting for a response I went and disabled every single mod except the Official Plugins and Unofficial Patches. I could not reproduce the bug anymore. Turns out one or more of my mods are the culprits.

Which one could it be? Is two or more mods conflicting somehow and causing this to happen? If you have any suggestions, please come forth. Even though I could always install everything again, I would like to avoid that if possible.

Based on the issues you are having I want to say you are running out of VRAM.  What OBGE shaders are you using along with the other graphic options you are using for oblivion set in the Nvidia control panel and ini.

Posted

Could that be happening?

All settings in NVIDIA Control Panel are currently on factory default.

All settings in the options of Oblivion are on max. Game runs on fullscreen with V-sync. HDR, Bloom and Anti-Aliasing are disabled.

I use Obge v3 with the shaders Godrays, CrysisDoF, CelShader+EdgeAA, NormalFilterAA and Ring_SSAO enabled.

That is all.

Posted

With those shaders and the 4096 versions of the high res textures, those shaders and your screen resolution I could see it hitting the dedicated VRAM limit and it having to swap. If you are using the shader list to enable the shaders you should remove Oblivion Graphics Extender Support.esp.

Posted

I do not actually use the 4096 versions. I use the 2048 ones. Neither do I play in native resolution but in 1360x768 as it looks better in my eye.

If it actually is as you say and I am running out of VRAM why does it only occur in interiors? Never has it happened in an exterior.

Posted

Then it is not a vram issue, what drivers are you using. I would recommend the 314.22 version unless you have a game that really needs the latest version.

Posted

Now that you mention this:

It might well be that video card drivers indeed are responsible for me never seeing that blackscreen bug again (instead of that Bash tweak). I remember in fact once installing a different set of drivers a long time ago.

So you should experiment with different nVidia drivers to see if they are a remedy to the problem.

If not - it's already a breakthrough that you found out one specific mod (or several) is/are responsible for the issue. It sure is quite a tedious process to reactivate them one by one or in small groups, everytime testing if the bug reappears. But eventually you will find out which plugin is causing the effect and can act accordingly.

Back when I was having the textures turning black effect it also happened in exterior cells: The first time I ever saw it, parts of Fort Farragut were missing.

Posted

A day may come, when I have created a flawlessly working installation of Oblivion... but it seems it is not this day.

Still, I will not give in. I will find those which are responsible and restore order. This might take a while as I also have other business to attend to. Not a too long while, though. I will return once I have made significant progress or solved the issue.

Until then.

Posted

I have returned.

I had an extremely busy week and because of that I did not have the time to go tinkering about. Apologies.

But... once I managed to get started, results came swiftly.

It appears that OBGEv3 does not handle the recent update to Kyoma's MiniMap mod so well. More specifically, the changes to the method of local map rendering. The solution to the problem is not to use an older version of the MiniMap, but to use OBGEv3.1RC4. Yes, even though it is a release candidate it seems to be more stable than the current "stable" version that is OBGEv3.

Truth is, when I first encountered the bug I blamed OBGE. Seems like I was not too far from the truth, after all.

So, I guess that does it. Problem solved! And even though none of the volunteers here had a solution, I am still grateful for your contribution. When one thinks of it, it is not immediately obvious that the aforementioned mods would conflict in such a bizarre way.

Thank you, farewell.

Yeah, this is something unforeseen only you yourself could probably have figured out on your own. I'm glad the game is now working for you without the black texture glitch. On the plus side some valuable information on technical/graphical aspects of the game have been gathered in this thread.

Other people suffering from similar issues might profit from that info and the posted links.
