Unable to launch EA desktop...

Hey simmers,

I've been having this problem lately. I can't even describe it aptly enough to get Google / EA forums to come up with anything relatively helpful. This has now happened twice, and the first time I was able to resolve it--a number of problems were at play including outdated/incorrect drivers for my new video card, my antivirus attacking EA for some godforsaken reason, and finally, me having some sort of glitch with my windows theme that resulted in ... well, you can see from the screenshot what kind of "theme" my computer is running (it looks just like windows XP).

Literally no clue how to fix this, having uninstalled, reinstalled, rebooted, uninstalled, repaired, etc., I have made exceptions for my firewall, I have even completely shut down my antivirus and firewall protection. I've checked file integrity via my antivirus, EA, and now I've run a full computer integrity scan and everything came back fine.

ANY help would be greatly appreciated. Please enjoy the throwback-esque Windows XP theme I am stuck with.

Try right clicking your desktop and clicking "Personalize" then on the left side click "Themes" and see which them you're using.

About the errors, are they only happening with the Sims? Does it happen with any other EA games or games in general?

You could try posting this on reddit's like r/WindowsHelp r/pchelp r/techsupport in the meantime, or the r/Sims4 troubleshooting thread that's pinned at the top

You could also try doing a full clean of your old GPU drivers using DDU/Display Driver Uninstaller if you're still having the issue, sometimes drivers will cause issues eventually if not properly wiped. There are plenty of tutorials on how to use DDU and where to download it.

Thank you for looking into this for me!

The error occurs when I try to open EA's app. I am unable to play any EA games or anything using EA. I did a full clean of the old GPU drivers when I had this issue last time and I knew my drivers were screwy because my resolution was also permanently stuck at Old Man 6,000x magnification, but that is not the now because I tried wiping and reinstalling my drivers with no success. I'm going to try launching and monitoring the log in event viewer to see if I can spot any issues--currently the only error signs my computer is throwing is that my antivirus is messing things up, even when I turn off the antivirus.

It seems AVG causes enough problems with the EA app that it's 1 of the 2 AV's (other one being McAfee) mentioned directly by EA that are known to cause issues with their app/games.

Make sure you didn't miss these files in the exclusions

EADesktop.exe in C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\EA Desktop\EA Desktop (Usually is here, check your other drivers if you installed it elsewhere)

and EALauncher.exe as well as EABackgroundService.exe which should be in the same folder as "EADesktop.exe".

You could also try running the EALauncher.exe file as administrator.

If none of that works I would consider temporarily uninstalling AVG just to know for sure it's not still interacting in some way with the EA app.
