...what do they have in common?

 

 

Nah, fuck that question.  What don't they have in common?

1) Appearance   2) Voice actor   3) Event that brings them into the plot   4) Side mission   5) Backstory

aaaaaand that's it.

 

I almost suspect Bethesda intentionally half-assed everything about the design of the four "main" companions in Starfield,

all because they knew the modding community would pick up the slack, no matter what.

 

Where's my chaotic pirate waifu?  The one who gets hot-and-bothered every single time we seize a UC or Galbank hauler?

Where's the heartless, money-minded suit who has nothing but disgust whenever you pass up the chance to extort somebody in front of him?

How about the grizzled old veteran?  Somebody who doesn't give a shit about starting a fight, as long as it means there's one less soul in the galaxy who's going to waste his time?

 

Nope, we got four copy-pastes of the same bland, moralistic, puritanical characters who all judge you for the same reasons; who'll witness you lay waste to an entire fleet of do-gooders, hate your guts, go to time-out in the corner for 3 days, and then forget everything you ever did.

 

So, past all the bitching...

One of two things oughta happen (likely both, in time):

1) New companions built from scratch, who'll embody all the different alignments that make an RPG an RPG.

2) Unfettering the secondary companions, adding preferences and traits to them, and allowing the full-relationship mechanics to apply to them.

 

Obviously, option 2 is gonna happen first.  I just can't be alone in thinking it can't get here goddamn soon enough.
