Armor piece shows up below the ground instead of on the body

So I've been trying to make a lamia follower and decided to use some tail meshes from this oldrim mod https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/56219?tab=description (I use SE so I updated it with cathedral assets).
I used Outfit Studio where I smoothed the tail out, put some new textures on it, tested it out on a 3BA body preset and then exported it as a new .nif file.
I added the armor through creation kit (again it looked normal in the preview as in right above ground).
When I load up the game the tail looks like it's supposed to but for some reason it is also stuck below the ground and not on the character.
Relevant mods I use:
XP32 Maximum Skeleton
Caliente Bodies

First thing that comes to mind is that there's a translation somewhere in the nif that the CK doesn't use, but the game does. That seems to be off by about +200 units on the Z axis. That's the kind of value you'd be looking for.
