Critical hits and VATS

Hey guys, I play without VATS. Makes it more exciting for me. However, some perks are now uninteresting for my character. Namely those who push VATS.

However, I'm wondering if critical hits are tied to VATS or if it also happens in "free" combat. There is also the perk "more damage on critical hits". Is the perk usable without VATS?

Crits are tied to Vats particularly hitting space bar.

 

There are some mods that change that but for the most part it just ends up being more effort imho.

 

In default game there is a drug called Overdrive which literally gives Crits outside of hitting space bar in Vats, so it sort of defeats the point of using a mod.

 

There is also Jet, which also defeats the point of using a mod called Vaffs, which introduces Bullet time in place of VATs.

 

So default game wise you have items in game that sort of defeat the need for some decent enough mods.

 

The main thing like you said....Some perks work better in Vats, and some mods address that such as Vaffs and maybe others.

 

Just seems like an effort that may be better spent elsewhere modding wise though to me and I have tried Vaffs.

Overdrive drug enables crits outside VATs, so better criticals works while under the effect of Overdrive.
