So How do you complete vanilla follower questlines and keep Ivy with you?

The description in 6.0 said she can be kept as a soft follower while you have to grind Nick, Piper, Cait etc... But there is no setting in the holotape or dialogue option, she ju8st goes back to Ivy's place. Did I miss something obvious?
