Current best Skyrim version for mod support

It's been a few years since I last played Skyrim, and recently wanted to have a go at it again. However, a lot of things have changed, and with the constant rereleases, there seems to have been some fragmentation of the mod community. It was already messy to update the game for new versions, and now that there's the original version, the legendary edition, the special edition, and the aniversary edition, I only expect it to get worse. Already had some issues with just knowing which version of the skse to get, and after a bit of fiddling I couldn't get skyui to load, so will have to have another go next time.

My question is, should I try to get things running on my legacy (steam) version of the game, or has everyone moved on and I should get a new version if I expect good mod support? And if so, which?

It doesn't really matter, pretty much anything can be ported between SE and LE except mods dependent on SKSE dlls. Bethesda broke a lot of SKSE functions in AE and most mods haven't been updated for it yet, so I would avoid AE. Other than that, LE and SE are pretty similar from a technical and mod standpoint.
