Overly shiny body? (solved)

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

So recently I've been having an issue where my PC's body will become extremely shiny whenever I equip or remove clothes, and I can only make it go back to normal (temporarily) by opening and closing Racemenu. The effect doesn't apply to the face, feet, or hands.

So far I've tried uninstalling and updating every skin-related mod I could think of (fair skin complexion, skin tones, my main skin mod, wetfunction, the works). Has anyone else had a similar problem?

The shine:

How I want it to look:

Edit: Doesn't seem to be a mod issue at all, but rather something up with the preset I used to make this char, since I have no issues on a fresh install. Seems to happen regardless of which preset I load. The rule seems to be that if I have at any point loaded any preset on a character, it's toast.

Edit 2: Finally found the issue! It was a problem with NPC Appearance changer, a mod I never used that doesn't even exist on nexus anymore. With that gone, there is no issue whatsoever.

Edit 3: Unfortunately it seems that any save touched by that mod is more or less unsalvageable.

Edit 4: For anyone else stumbling into this same hellhole, the most annoying issue is the fact that this bug can be carried through loading screens and across savefiles. As soon as you encounter it in your game you must close the application, and then reload from an earlier save.

I've been trying to setup a new save now, and turns out it got infected simply from me loading the old save to check some MCM settings. So always close your game after dealing with contaminated savefiles I guess?

I hope someone find this useful in some future, i encounter a similar issue with a similar or same?20230727091034_1.thumb.jpg.9a38a66ce8799fb576b371bac7dcb8a2.jpg mod NPC Clothes Changer and Maintainer SSE - https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/50066?tab=description, i spend several hours uninstalling and updating every skin-related and lighting mod, because in my case the body shadows were broken, and only for my playable character, every other female was fine regardless of sharing the same body and texture, i don't have the energy to do more test but i find this post and i've said what da hell, get rid of the mod was the solution, and i hope this helps someone out there someday

this issue was found using Skyrim AE - version 1.6.640

facing the same issue, I just uninstalled the mod above but I am still seeing the problem on a new game.  I guess I'll have to clean the jslot or something. 1.6.1170

I deleted "NPC Clothes Changer and Maintainer SSE", still no change on new game.  I deleted all presets too. I'm at a loss..

I think I solved it. I had to delete all my game saves and start new.

I noticed that when I started a new game after I cleaned the update with xedit. It would be okay but as soon as I load it another game save then it started affecting the new game.  It seems the problem carried over and I started affecting the new game profile as well. For now it seems that new games are no longer having that issue.  I don't mind starting no game as long as I don't see this problem.

That's because the issue is in the SKSE co-save. As it was stated in the threads I linked above, to finalize the fix you need to clean your RM jslot file and reapply it to your character. This gets rid of the issue from the co-save without requiring a new playthrough.

Starting a new playthrough will work around the problem until whichever mod applied the broken override and/or overlay does its thing again, then you're back to square 1.

That's an ilusion caused by whichever mod is messing with the overrides. This was also mentioned in the threads I linked.

The TL;DR is:

  1. Save a RM preset of your character when the texture is wrong.
  2. Open the resulting jslot file in notepad and inspect the skinOverrides and overlays arrays.
  3. Remove entries with empty data values, or data values that point to non-existant texture files.
    1. Use the texture paths you removed to locate the source mods. Disable or fix these mods.
    2. If you had empty data entries, search through all pex scripts in all mods (including in BSA archives) for relevant NiOverride functions. Disable or fix the mods that look relevant.
  4. Once you've removed or fixed all mods that add broken overrides and/or overlays, reapply your fixed jslot file.

When the issue is affecting NPCs, you'll need to get more creative. This was also in the threads I linked above; see the one about PNS.

Thanks, i'll keep this as a sticky for me if this should occur again.  So far so good, tested a new female character again today, no more gloss.

It's possible you created this issue yourself by removing a mod, as removing mods won't remove RM overlays and overrides. If this is the case then restarting a new playthrough will work as finalizing the fix. In this case you won't see this problem again, at least not for the same reasons.

I believe so.
